German retreat from Egypt on G1

I got tired of seeing the Axis win, so I thought, frak it, have the Brits buy carriers, and I support with nothing but fighters and bombers (since fighters can’t provide escort into Germany)….so the mo’fo brings all 6 Japan fighters to Berlin when I had Bombers into position.  At least the nuclear blast in S. Europe was beautiful. 
Done the 2nd Bomber.  I like it.
When I buy fighters, I stop buying subs…understand that the Brits can block it, but they’ll be expending cash they can’t afford…Besides, if they’re spending money to block my subs, who the hell is going to take out the BB?  The Russians?  They can’t afford to lose fighters.

Well both games were played with a time limit of 5 minutes per turn, with 2 minutes for movement. I had never played Axis and Allies with an automatic limit, and I was also playing with a different interface than I’m used to. So I made a lot of ignorant mistakes.

On the first game I simply got diced playing with Russia. Germany went for a round 1 8 armor buy and stacked Karelia. Then it moved the stack to Archangel. I lost the attack on Archangel despite having 70% odds…

The second one was simply crazy. Made a lot of mistakes with Japan on round 1 and half my fleet was at the bottom of the ocean by J2 while the US were going full Pacific. Meanwhile Russia sunk the German Med fleet (missed the 3rd fighter buy) and stacked Ukraine on R2 due to some other German messed up G1.
Well, what happened afterwards was that Japan immediately switched production to only infantry, fighters and bombers and started sending it all towards Russia until the US eventually caught up with the remaining Japanese fleet off Africa and sunk it. But meanwhile Japan was able to send 1 big infantry stack through Yakut while taking India and overrunning most of Africa. And the airforce started landing on Karelia to protect the German stack that moved there that was preventing the UK from landing and joining a very big Russian stack on West Russia.
Since the UK was blocked from major landings on Europe (Germany, W. Europe and Karelia were all defended) it bought 1 IC for South Africa, and later 1 IC for India, after the Americans liberated it. And that also build 2 ICs on Phillipines and Borneo. The UK meanwhile had also gotten East Indies.
Meanwhile, the UK started worrying about the 8 fighters, 3 bombers and 1 Japanese sub within range of its fleet, so it decided to pull back from SZ5 to SZ6 and add a 2nd carrier and destroyer, giving it a total of 3 carriers, 1 battleship, 4 destroyers, 1 sub and 6 fighters. Enough to stop the Japanese. Alas, not enough to stop a kamikaze Japanese attack followed by Germany’s 5 fighters, 2 bombers and 1 sub. Just that battle was worth losing the game.
Germany then managed to build up 20 inf and 30 arm and send them to West Russia, forcing the Russians to pull back from Caucasus, which felt on the next turn. The UK and the US meanwhile had ICs all over Asia to try to help the Russians. Japan was fortified against the US but out of the game. But after conquering Caucasus I was thinking of sending that army to liberate Asia (all the ICs… yummy). However, Allies managed to liberate Karelia and take Rome. Game over, they got the 9 victory cities.

I would be surprised if Germany had Africa and then wasted those IPC’s on subs. Seems counterproductive.

I have seen used very similar strategy against me. The Germans sunk my med ships with the planes, purchased AC and a tran. Of course, I was not able to sink AC, BB and 2figs as Hobbes suggests but I was still a happy player because what Germany put on water equaled to 7inf and was doomed sooner or later anyway.

And I suggested wrongly. I apologize because I just realized that I completely misread the post and didn’t account for the German carrier. In that situation yeah, G will have a nice fleet that the Allies won’t be able to do much about for some turns.

Just played some 3 rounds against a player who did that.
Germany went very weak with a regular R1, ukraine won for soviets (1 tank remaining) And a very risky but succesful sz5 (baltic) attack.

This made uk take norway r1, and build in counter 3 destroyers+1 transport
R2 was allied mass in sz 12 (gibraltar). Germany never dared to attack.

Guess what? Bombing costed me around 10 IPCs total, but no bomber was lost on any raids.

This and many other experiences make me think that bombing is weak.  You risk 12, for 0 if you get hit; 0 for 3.5 if you don’t.
Not to mention that optional rule of escorts… which we don’t use anymore.

I like the Baltic carrier build. The case against it is that it’s five less inf moving towards Russia, but without a carrier, you’re going to use those Inf to defend the coast anyway. The only time I don’t build it, is if Russia’s first round attacks went really bad.

I prefer a 6 inf, 2 arm, 1 bomber or 3 inf, 1 art, 3 arm, 1 bomber. The added punch to the Luftwaffe can be really helpful in preventing the UK from doing any landings on UK1.
Usually the Algeria landing is prevented until US1 or UK2, which gives the Germans 1 more round to bring troops to Africa (if Russia hasn’t bought a sub on R1, that is). And if you manage to sink the UK fleet on G2 then you won’t have to worry much from the UK/US for the next turns. If the UK buys 1 AC and 2 DDs, then they’ll have those plus 2 fighters and the US cruiser for defense, possibly also the R sub, depending on how that battle went. You’ll have 2 subs, 2 fighters and 2 bombers, if the 3rd sub survived the battle up SZ1 (by losing the fighter instead of the sub, for instance) then it is possible to sink all Allied ships.
