A&A Variant that adds a twist to the game

@mhal21 I don’t play poison gas warfare for one simple reason. Poison gas was not as much of a thing as people think it was in WWI. Yes it was terrifying and it made the headlines when it happened, but the estimates are that around 150 000 casualties happened due to gas, which is something like 2-3 days of a huge battle on the Western front.
I know some people have dabbled with it so there is stuff out there. You might want to hop on the Axis and Allies Facebook page to ask your question !

I would use these rules:

(1) if the defender sees a key battle coming and can predict that they’ll want an unusual order of loss, they can leave a note, send an e-mail, etc., informing the attacker of their preferred order of loss, and the attacker will then follow that order.

(2) if there is no note, the attacker will provisionally use a standard order of loss.

(3) after seeing the results of the battle, the defender can pay 2 IPCs to the bank per casualty that they want to switch. You didn’t want to lose your bomber after all? Fine, pay 2 IPCs, and you can have your bomber back in exchange for one of your infantry. This should be expensive enough to deter casual abuse but still cheap enough that if you would really be upset about the order of loss, you can fix it without too much drama. Don’t think it’s fair that you should have to pay to set up your order of loss exactly the way you want it? Well, then, you should have foreseen the battle and given orders in advance. Don’t feel like thinking that hard every turn? Well, then, you can always just cough up 2 IPCs. It’s a way of speeding up the game while making sure that nothing unacceptably bad will happen because of order of loss issues.

I was going to create a 1940 game based off of Doug Friend’s 1939 game. I want to create a 1940 game based off of Global 1939, but with fewer Russian territories. I would like to create a 1940 game with an appropriate Dutch roundel. The Dutch roundel for Axis & Allies Global 1940 is historically inaccurate because the Dutch dropped that roundel in late 1939 in favor of the orange triangle symbol.  I was thinking of making a new Global 1940 game for Doug Friend again.

I have the files on one of my hard drives. I want to download Global 1939 and modify it for 1940 or possibly 1942 with Iraq as a pro-Axis neutral. I was thinking of creating Amazonas for Brazil.  I have gotten people interested in my World War I game already. I was thinking of also creating a game about Wake Island.  I want to recreate World War I from Axis & Allies. I would like to see if any World War I themed plastic miniatures could be made. I would like to see some World War I Russian pieces spray-painted the Soviet color from the Axis & Allies series of games.  I would like to see British pieces painted orange for the Japanese and I am not sure what a Chinese uniform from World War I looked like. China was involved in World War I on the Allied side to get back Tsingtao from the Japanese and to get a place at the Versailles Peace Conference.  I have included China and Japan on the same side.

Italy and Japan were on the Allied side in World War I.  I have decided to recreate a 1940 scenario. Could I please buy Doug Friend’s 1939 game and modify it for a 1940 game?

I want to recreate a 1940 game or paint the board for a 1942 game where Japan is poised to invade Australia and the West Coast of the United States of America.  I have decided that I want to create a 1940 or 1942 game.   I have decided to expand the Caribbean to include British islands and to include the Dutch islands in the Caribbean.  My 1940 game is available on my hard drive (if I can get access to it) and I would like World War I themed money for my World War I game and a battle board with silhouettes of World War I tanks, air units, mechanized infantry, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, cavalry, infantry, and submarines.

Transports do not get any attack or defense. They are destroyed when they are attacked by an enemy player.  The game also has France taking back Alsace-Lorraine and I downloaded it off of HBG and there are too many IPC bonuses.  I argue that the game needs to be a little more balanced.  The Central Powers win by controlling London, Petrograd, and Paris. The Allies win by controlling Berlin, Vienna, and Constantinople, as long as one or more Allied capitals are still in Allied hands.

Russia becomes the Soviet Union after turn 4 when the October Revolution happens and the Russian Civil War pits the White Russians against the Bolsheviks.  They control certain territories in Russia and if the White Russians win, then the monarchy is restored and if the Bolsheviks win, then the Soviet Union happens.

The Bolshevik roundel shall be the Soviet Union roundel from the Axis & Allies games.

Coachofmany, (Doug) can you please see if you can print out roundels for my World War I game?  I would like roundels for the United States, ANZAC, Great Britain, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Serbia, France, China, Portugal, Belgium, and Japan. I have created the star roundel for the Chinese because the famous white sun against a blue background was not adopted until 1928.

Denmark, Chile, and Sweden are pro-Central Powers neutrals.  ANZAC is in the game played by Great Britain. Japan is controlled by the player that controls Great Britain and is played on Great Britain’s turn.
Brazil is controlled by the United States and so is China. Chinese units are not allowed to leave China at any time.  They may attack Tsingtao when they are at war with the Central Powers.

Italy cannot enter the war until after turn 2.  The United States cannot enter the war until turn 3.  China cannot enter the war until the United States in at war with the Central Powers.

I am not sure of a color for China, so I decided to paint it the pro-Allies neutral color.  I have decided to create 3 infantry for Denmark in case it is attacked by the Allies and about 6 infantry for the Netherlands in case it is attacked by either the Allies or the Central Powers.  Sumatra 1 infantry, Java 1 infantry, Dutch East Indies, 1 infantry, Celebes 1 infantry.

Any suggestions for setup to make it more balanced or at least work properly?

I really like the idea of 1 IPC per valueless allied pacific island. I am going to propose that to the group I play with, because we are always looking for a way to balance the game, but at the same time try to keep it as close to OOB as possible.

What we have been doing for several games, and it is working well, is this:

Play “cry uncle” - so no Victory City win condition for Axis.
Germany not allowed to build factories in original German controlled territories.
USA can do whatever they want in the European theater only, right away in turn one.

I think for a system like this to be successful one probably needs to replace the capital capture for “all the cash” dynamic. Even now, the only merit it really has is for game resolution purposes. In my view it is a hold-over from Classic that continues to undermine the VC system.

Unfortunately Europe 1940, has the capital capture dynamic built into the very first round, so you’d have to come up with an alternative system that keeps Germany viable without that French purse. A same time system like the one I was trying to outline, you’d definitely need some new rules to address that mobilization issue for G40, since it comes up right away, unlike Revised or AA50 where you could usually just call the game at that time.

Yes of course. Only UK and USA can get torpedo bomber.
Same thing for the dive bomber. Only Germany, USSR, Japan and USA may built this kind fo unit.
Japan has both at the beginning of War II.

It’s why I decided group them as tactical bombers.  That way everyone has a use for them.

Commanders (based on d12 system)
Each major power can have one or more military commanders that affect the outcome of battles. Each turn one commander unit is placed in a territory you wish to attack and can affect a +1 modifier on attack or defense for the sum of combat units equal to its leadership value for the duration of combat rounds. Each nation begins with commanders as follows:

Note: The engaged commander remains in the territory till the end of the turn. If enemy forces choose to counterattack and capture the territory  then that commander is considered killed in battle and cannot be replaced. All Leaders can only affect land battles except the leaders with * which can effect battles on the sea.

This is what I have come up with:

Rommel allows all panzer and infantry divisions in the same province to travel +1 and two divisions gain +1 attack.
Zhukov gains one free infantry division each turn in the province he is in.

Montgomery’s troops gain +1 defense and two or less tank divisions gain +1 attack.

Patton’s advantage is that three or less land units a battle gain +1 attack.

Yamamoto’s fleet can move +1 and airplanes on carries in his fleet can go on kamikaze missions with +1 attack. (In a kamikaze mission, the plane can go its full range and is lost after attacking.)

A general is dead if his unit is killed.
