You are, for two reasons. First, subs fire or submerge before anything else fires, unless there is an enemy destroyer in the battle. Second, air units can’t hit subs unless there’s a destroyer friendly to the air units in the battle. So, in the case of only air units attacking only subs, the subs can submerge before the air units fire, but even if they don’t the air units can’t hit them.
Attacking air + destroyer vs subs+surface ships +air

Hey Kriegshound
Thanks for the help in previous threads, unfortunely i have another question…In my last game i attacked ger SS,BB,CC+DD and several fighters, with UK fighters, DD,CC and BB, after first round i have no destroyers left, however my opponent does have several subs left, And this is where we disagreed…
I believe (very firmly, unfortunely cannot find in rulebook or in threads on this lovely forum to back me up) that my fighters can only hit his surface ships and air units since i have no destroyer in 2nd round.
He believes that since i had a destroyer present in the start of battle, its effect (air can hit subs) works the rest of the combat regardless whether its alive or not in the next rounds of combat. (it is actually rather wagely stated so under destroyer in the rulebook (1940E).So who is right???

You are. The influence of one unit on another disappears beginning in the round after it is no longer in the battle.
