Transport/Sub Non-Combat Rule

Scenario B would be correct. The rules specifically say that while it is legal to onload troops onto friendly transports, they must onload on your turn, and may only be offloaded on your next turn. The U.K may not offload the troops for you or you may not hop scotch using a transport.

The Germans have no destroyer present, therefore the defending air units can not hit the sub, and of course the sub can never hit planes. Think of it in terms of the combined arms rule, air units can only hit subs if they are combined with at least 1 participating destroyer, the difference with this particular combined arms is that it works while attacking and defending. In the scenario that you described, the sub would destroy the remaining transport without rolling and the defending fighters can do nothing.

I don’t have setup charts in front of me for Global 40. In my games we have British Commandos, Marines, Germany Air borne and others. You could have it were you buy paratrooper troop just for air transport like you suggested. Give it a few. Other guys will be posting too with there ideas.

The US cannot win this battle.  The fighters will continue to defend in the air until the battle is over.  The Japanese fighters and US subs can’t hit each other, so the fighters will sink transports until the US retreats.  If the US wishes to conduct this amphibious assault, it must bring units that are capable of hitting the fighters.

Yes.  They just need to be the only legal selection for a loss.  That might mean that planes have no other target (like this example), or that Sub hits have no other ship targets, or that the defenders hit everything else in a round of combat and need to assign some more hits before the defender retreats.  Remember, the defender still has the option to retreat, if they can, and transports are only automatically destroyed when they’re attacked, not when attacking (unless the attacker has no place to retreat).

if both sides have submarines present in a naval battle with destroyers, the subs must participate in combat. however, as soon as a side has removed all destroyers as casualties and their opponent still has submarines, they may submerge and escape the battle if they wish.

Therefore, during the combat movement phase, a power may choose to attack a lone sub with a lone sub, but during the resolve combat phase the defender may choose to defend and resolve combat or submerge before any dice are rolled (the defender is not required to make that choice until all combat movements are finished).

Remember this: Submarines have 3 special abilities,

1. Submerge to escape combat
2. Pass through hostile sea zones within their movement limit
3. Surprise strike disallowing casualty rolls

A submarine may not do any of these with an enemy destroyer present.

In my experience, people forget to use their own subs special abilities, once their opponent removes their destroyers in the early rounds of the battle.

The rules make it a challenge, but like anything else, it has it’s time and place in the game. Wait for your opponent to leave a factory undefended with aircraft, or to slow down their economy when they need it most. IMO, Germany should have 2-3 bombers by G6 or G7 and should use them to make Russia spend precious dollars to repair ICs, while simultaneously combining with original Luftwaffe/methodical small naval purchases to keep the Allied fleets at bay.

But… losing a bomber sucks.  :oops:

My group and I have not played since Christmas and are planning on playing this weekend. Could someone please point me to the newest and most up to date rules and objectives.
