When you land on a carrier from another SZ, do you count the SZ…

@nubnumber1 just like a fighter unit in A&A is meant to represent many aircraft,think of a destroyer unit representing a group (flotilla I think is the term) of destroyers.Military history has many examples of small,yet determined, forces delaying the progress of larger forces. eg 101st airborne in Bastogne dec 1944

In the latest printing, that last sentence reads, “Transports may not attack in a sea battle without being accompanied by at least 1 unit with an attack value.”

If you don’t have enough pieces to top off all your stacks, use any identifying item, such as a piece of paper with the unit type written on it. The number of stacks is not limited by the number of plastic pieces available.

The USA cannot move any units into any land territory that’s not their own until they are at war.
So, no, they cannot send fighters to the UK until they are at war with Germany.

I’m also pretty sure it’s a no.
The rules say you can plan to win a sea battle (no matter what the odds are), but there’s nothing about planning to lose a battle or retreat from a battle.

While it can be expensive to send just air units against ground units, sometimes it is warranted.
In a recent game of 1942 2nd edition, Germany was really giving Russia a hard time and Russia was having trouble having enough troops and tanks to retake their own territories. The US and UK had built up sizable air forces so they took turns attacking the German infantry and tanks so on Russia’s turn, they could simply move in and take the territories thus improving their income.
While the US/UK did lose some expensive air units, it worked out very well as Russia was able to roll up a lot of territory and Germany just couldn’t produce enough to reverse the tide. Russian tanks would blitz 2 territories while Germany could only take the 2nd territory back in combat. Then here would come those dang Brit or American planes again.

You’re right, the exact quote is:

In order to demonstrate that an air unit might have a safe landing zone, you may assume that all of your attacking rolls will be hits, and all defending rolls will be misses.

Maybe I’ll have better luck double-checking the sub rule: since the surprise attack OR submerge round comes before the general combat round, you could in fact start a battle with a sub against a DD-free opponent with no intention of finishing the fight since the sub is free to submerge before any opponents fire.

Yes. Planes can always retreat. The only things that can’t are units which came via transports

But to add:

If the amphibious assault is called off during the naval battle before the units on the transports disembark, any planes (and land units attacking from other territories) that commited to that fight still have to go through one round of combat before they can retreat.
