What's the first thing you'll do upon getting Europe 1940?

Wittman is right about the importance of taking Paris with Germany.  A couple weeks ago, my group had an interesting development– Germany failed to take Paris due to horrific rolls.  Usually, that would end the game, but the Italian Player ended up taking it, and he went wild with the extra income-- he controlled all the Med and knocked the Allies out of North Africa and was well on the way to South Africa by I5 or I6.  Despite Italy’s success, Germany was never able to get that subtle edge over the Soviets.

Without the income boost, Germany cannot mount a very viable SeaLion, AND the build-up to Barbarossa is too anemic to make the push on Moscow really strong.  It is amazing how vital that 17 IPC boost is for maintaining a good head of steam.

I usually figure half and hour to an hour per round as long as players have a concrete idea of what they want to accomplish and plan during other people’s turns.  So, the fastest game of Europe I have had so far was this last weekend, at 4.5 hours and 5 rounds.

I looked it up. Yes, you are right. It only applies to major ICs, so a minor one could indeed be built in Finland.

Italy. For the novelty factor alone.
I like problem-solving, and Italy is bound to have more problems than the proverbial one-armed paper hanger…
Plus, it looks like there’ll finally be something interesting to do in Africa, with so many French and British units around to roll up.

I’d like Italy because they aren’t all over the place, they basically have only 1 front and they can have a fun and challenging time taking over Africa. Very little stress. They can just do what they like and support the Germans as needed… What a life!

I probably won’t be Italy first… but they’d be fun to play with as you could experiment a good bit… with what to attack and where to go. You could play as Italy the first time and learn what not to do with other powers by just watching everyone else. Then you’d be more prepared when you play again.

As I said, the only time this would be good is if Russia holds all its territories and is about to attack Germany, and so Japan captures 1 territory to stop them.

In my rules NCM is simultaneous with Combat Movement; there is no reinforcing areas you just captured in any circumstances.

Therefore, you can only rail units into territories you’ve held since your last turn, representing the problems of converting track gauges and so forth.  You still have to build your attack in stages, giving the enemy the chance to counter-rail his own forces to that front, or to disrupt such movement by attacking vulnerable links in the chain of territories on your network.

If the Axis allows the Allies to move a large force from Cape Town to Moscow in one move they really deserve to get screwed.
