From the proceeding post, I take it that the project is a ways from completion, even for one nation?

Italy is near completion.  The rest can’t really go forward until Italy starts to sell.

Hmm, if they are depending on sales of the new units for Italy to keep the project going, they are going to have a long wait.  I cannot see that a lot of guys are going to pay on the order of $50 for different Italian sculpts.  Even $30 is a bit much.

yeah I was wondering about that… kicking it off with the Germans or US probably would’ve generated more sales I’d think.

The issue is we started from scratch on this project and it was a slow process getting started.  We first began to contemplate this to replace AA50 parts so we started with ITALY.  Now that this is actually getting off the ground I agree that GERMANY would have been the first choice.  That is why we bumped GERMANY up on the schedule and it will be the next release after ITALY

  • It is regretable that we are debating the price openly.

I hope Jeremy makes loads of money on this project, and is able to fund many more.

The pieces appear to be a very high quality and some of us are willing to pay for that.  There are quite many in the set and some of us are willing to pay for that too.  There is also a great variety of pieces, not even required to play the game, and some are willing to pay for that.

On the other hand, some are looking at a $75 dollar game (~$150 if you combine the two) and thinking “How much will I pay to ‘trick out’ my game?”  There are going to be a lot of folks with a hard ceiling around $100 total I believe.  Unfortunately some of the demands for a piece to do this or that drove the cost up, and some folks fell off the bottom end when that happened.  For example, we don’t need two tanks per nation, or a transport plane.  But providing those pieces created a cost that has to be absorbed.  Now the whole set has to cost more unless FMG comes up with a plan to offer “basic” sets with infantry, one tank, one arty piece, three planes, and one of each ship.  For my part, I would love to be able to consider buying some a-la-cart.  I may be able to afford all the high quality ships and selected other pieces, for example.

Enterpreneurship is all about figuring out this delicate balance.  I want to wish Jeremy the best of luck.  Whether I buy a set, or five or even none, he is providing the community a service we didn’t have before.  Thanks.

  • I’m doing the same thing. I will probably buy the standard 6 sets each

There is no good way to do this without being stuck with a bunch of incomplete sets.  You would be stripping specific pieces out of full sets.  FMG would end up with bins full of transports, etc. because people only wanted new cruisers.

The only way this whole process is done within a reasonable cost structure is for fulls sets to be molded in large batches.  And them sold as complete sets.

Understand that I do like the notion, but I know that it is not a feasible way to do things.

I think by ala cart, he actually meant only fmg figs that directly replace existing ones, thus eliminating the air transport/medium bombers, one armor type, one infantry type, commanders, trucks, bunkers, etc.  Each nation could have a core set (ala cart), and a tech expansion set.  Which actually might have been a better way to go from the start, as fewer molds could have reduced initial cost, allowing to fund the next core set and expansions down the line.  And considering the size of what china will need per game rules (not crazy go nuts house rules), china would basically only be an expansion itself.

Moot point now.  Too much has been invested in the alternate molds.  It pretty much has to be a expanded set.

We wanted to do this once, and do it right!  So nothing was left out.  We added new units so the product would offer “more” than just a replacement for your stock units.

We have no regrets at this point.  The product will speak for itself once you see it.

3 sets for me at least, dont really care about the price. Cant wait to start painting them

  • for god’s sake. please put a pre order option on ur website. then we can help out with ur financing of this great product. and for all those ppl who are complaining about the price. wait until you see te final price. stop nagging. a deluxe version always costs more. thats how everything works. and no, im no millionaire. im just a poor student.

  • Probably not cost effective for FMG to sell striped down basic sets becouse their main cost is for producing and designing the molds. if you have been playing this game long enough you know the value of having 2 types of tanks and bombers etc. for alot of people, 2 or 3 full sets of 42 or revised will work just fine. my board is like 4ft.x 8ft.( about as big as a ping pong table)and cost about $200.00. So  for insane people like me and the other loonies on this forum GO FMG!!! I will buy these sets 1 at a time when i have alittle extra money here and there. till then ill have to get by with the pieces i have accumulated over the past 25 years.
its always about takin it to the next level.

  • I’d love to purchase all the nations, but I couldn’t justify paying more for pieces then I did for the game.  To those who will, consider yourself lucky to be able to afford it.

If you buy an AA50 right now, then you could justify buying the pieces because they would be a little less in price than that game. :-D

  • dont you need the rulebook for AA50 thou?

  • @lnmajor:

dont you need the rulebook for AA50 thou?

It usually comes with the game.

FMG, there are probably a whole lot of people such as this that you are going to miss out on. My guess is that the higher your price, the more customers you will lose on a geometric proportion. I will still buy your pieces, but I am afraid people like me are far and few between.

  • FMG for clarity and the avoidance of doubt, I wish you every success and I’m 100% confident that your products will be awesome!

I really appreciate what you’re bringing to the community.

    @cminke:

    amen

I cannot wait to pre-order these pieces after years of disapointment over piece quality/quantity by WOTC this is a golden opportunity to right all those wrongs.

    Thank you FMG

  • Oh yeah, and as far as the price goes I think 40-50 bucks is more than fair for an initial run.  FMG has put all their money into this project not just to make them more money but to provide us with something we have all wanted for a long long time.  Hopefully we will back them up and make this worth their time and effort, and if they are smart they can take future lines down a bit on price after their R&D is paid for to back up a loyal customer/community base.

Honestly how long do you need to save up for at least one set of pieces?  Its not like each nation will come out one week after the other it will take a long time to get all the nations completed, and without our support along the way they never will be completed.

  • @Yoper:

And my point is that no matter how much I would like them to sell it at a low price, especially since I know that will dramatically increase the number of sales, they have to operate about what it costs them to produce it.

I was originally talking about how I can’t see them being able to produce it under a certain cost which is where my opinion then was as to how much they will have to charge for the product.

Once the mold cost is recovered, the production costs will be very low. How do you think that you can buy a big bag of plastic soldiers for $1 at any toy store.

  • How I see it is a $5 profit on (1) item is the same as a $1 profit on (5) items.

And that is how they should look at it.  You can’t increase sales by increasing prices.

The only fault in that logic is that the community is not actually overly huge and in general is willing to spend a fair bit on a board game.  So as your demand is high and your supply is low, they will charge a bit of a premium for their product.  It will be as reasonable as possible, I’m sure.

Besides the issue stated above (gamer population) … FMG is not looking to make major (or even minor) profits.  All they want is cool stuff and to have that cool stuff fund the next set of cool stuff!

Profit is not part of their business plan.  Breaking even and having a ton of cool game stuff is.
