Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein.  The atmosphere of the book is SOOO early 1960s, but it is truly one of the best novels I have ever read, period.  And what’s more – nowhere near 1,000 pages!  :-)

although i have few plans to make it to that end of Europe for a few years yet. Unless they breed well in POrtugal (i don’t remember seeing a single cow . . . horses and donkeys i saw, but no cows).

Yes… it those seem awfully strange to go through the ordeal of signing up, only not to post. Very strange.
