its impossible. They just have to leave out the AA bit and they will be fine. They cant use the words Axis and Allies to attempt to tie into the product unless they obtain a licensing agreement. ( which can be done but expensive)
Many games use similar pieces to Axis and Allies
“Attack” immediately jumps to mind, as well as “Superpowers”, “Tide of Iron” and “memoir 44”
As long as they say “WWII pieces” and don’t use the brand name Axis and Allies in order to advertise they should be good. Heck, Superpowers uses the A&A battle board and got away with it. That’s a lot more unique to A&A than WWII models.
Even marketing it as pieces for custom war games is a good idea.
