Has any one played this?  I am interested in the tile system, what is it made of?  What sise are the hexes?  It looks like plastic, I am curious if this could be an option for A&A Minis, also interested in the playability for my son, he’ll be 8 this summer and I want to get him into strategic games.

  • yeah, i bought this for my son and it can be pretty fun.  everything is plastic and the hexes are about 1.5 -2 inch.  the combat system is interesting but the dice quality is lacking.  each dice for attacker has skulls or blanks and defender has shields and blanks but the plastic dice just have cheap ink on them and it can rub off rendering them useless :-(
it is pretty simple, but has enough variety if you design your own terrain to have good replayability.  due to the high luck factor involved i generally get creamed :-P

  • I have played this as well. 9 to 14 or so should have loads of fun with it. The minis are all pretty detailed and have good heft to keep 'em from falling over. The terrain is plastic hexes of varying sizes and colors/textures to give different terrain effects. You stack 'em up to get elevations. You can also make caves and stuff. My understanding is they are pretty regular about expansions or more accurately boosters with new squads. You can build a bunch of battlefields with the Master set (which I like more than the game which is easy for a 37 year old.)

I don’t remember a lot about the dice or combat system. Don’t think it was to hard to get a handle on.

Thanks, guys.  I saw quite a bit of the terrain up for auction on Ebay and thought it might be something expandable and fun for my son and I.  Axis and Allies is still abit beyond his ability, although he understands the rules for chess so he’s getting there.  I am probably going to try minis with him and see how it goes.  I just don’t want him to get frustrated.

  • This game is probably just what you need then. Good stepping stone up to the other games. Although the A&A minis isn’t a bad idea either. How old is he?

    He’ll be 8 in June

  • You might try Memoir '44 with him. You mentioned that game in another thread. Those are pretty simple mechanics and all your units are already on the board. And the cards limit the choices for you.

I may do that, I don’t have the game myself.  I think that the Mini’s might be my best option though because I can strt with a 50pt battle and keep it simple to start.  Hell he might kick my but if I set him up good.  Not to mention I can play with the numbers to even it out.  Say 150pt allied army vs a 50pt Itallian Army.

As to the original topic what do you think of the viability of playing Mini’s on the Heroscape tiles.

  • Well, it was someone else’s set when I played Heroscape but I think that the big problem would be no roads or towns. Also I don’t think the scale is right for use with A&A minis. A hill can be only on one hex in minis and you build a hill in Heroscape. I only played a couple of games of minis too mind you. It is both too big and too small a game for me if that makes any sense. One of the other ways you could balance out minis without so obviously messing with the numbers is not using the best pieces in your force.

I posted my first attemt with my son in the Minis Discussion board.  All in all pretty fun and I’ll probably do it more often.

I played this a few times with some friends and I really liked it. I think your son would be able to understand it and play and it would probably be a nice introduction to strat games. I can’t comment on the Mini things since I’ve never played.

Thanks, I may look at picking it up for his birthday…

  • I thought it was better to reply to an old topic instead of starting a new one:

Anyone else on these boards play Heroscape on a regular basis and/or is on the Heroscapers.com website? If you are and haven’t figured it out yet, I am MegaSilver from Heroscapers.

    Thread NecrO!

Yes, I know, but I thought it better to reuse a thread instead of starting a new one with the same topic.

I’m just trying to see if any other A&A player on here also plays HeroScape.
