If an AC is attacked (say Pearl) and chosen as a casualty in the 1st round of combat can the fgt immediately withdraw after the first round of rolls and land safely on an adjacent allied held territory (say Pearl) or does the fgt need to stay in the battle until it is either destroyed or the enemy withdraws? Thanks

i think it needs to stay in teh battle unitll the battle ends. it lands right after all combat is resoveled. so i’m pretty sure it has to stay untill the battle is over.

Under standard rules defender never has the option to retreat, unless it is a sub and no Dest. is present.

Overall, listen to Demandr3d. He makes excellent points and recommends strong moves.

Sorry fyllefanten, but the suggestion of reinforcing the Germany Baltic fleet or UK India IC are not viable against strong opponents. There are easy ways of punishing both moves.

Germany baltic carrier buy: UK buys 2 fig a turn, and germany has to either commit even more resources there or have the navy sunk in a very uneven battle. Germany’s baltic fleet starts off in a terrible position because any movement option is towards a UK position of strength. The best option is to move out to sz7, force UK to attack, and hope to destroy a uk trans or fighter.

UK India IC: Japan can take the IC by round 2 no matter what the allies do. R1 attack with just enough to destroy US pearl navy and China. Move everything else to French Indo-China (including the remaining japan transport). R2 attack india with everything, and use the tranport to ferry 2 inf from east indies.

Hey Guys,

A group of US are just getting back into Axis and Allies and we also have a few new players. I have a list of common questions that I thought I would share, any help would be awesome as the older players are hopeing to excellerate the new guys skill levels.

Russia: Viable first turn purchases/combat moves?
Purchase: 3inf/3tank purchase is standard. 4tank/1art if germany did not bid any infantry to Europe. The purpose is to deadzone karelia in R1, so germany is unable to stack there safely. On subsequent rounds, Russia should buy almost all infantry.
Combat: Nomally Ukr & Wrus. Ukr with 3 inf, 1 art, 2 tanks, 2 fig if germany did not bid an infantry to Ukr. With an infantry bid, attack with 3 tanks instead of 2. You can also attack Belo instead of Ukr, which is safer.

Germany: What should Germant do with their Fleet if it manages to meet up in SZ 13 or 8?

UK: Is not puttting an IC in India viable? If so whats the alternative?
Never purchase an IC. Japan can always take India R2 without exception. UK1 has a lot of flexibility, but 1car, 1 trans, 2 inf is probably safest. The only required move for UK1 is to sink the baltic fleet.

Japan: Is attacking India J1 possible and how is it done without being left exposed?
Almost all good UK players evacuate India R1 because it’s in a deadzone. R1 Japan can project at least 4 fighters, 1 bomber, 3 inf, and a battleship minimum. I won’t go into details, but I guarantee you that Japan can safely take india R1 or R2 no matter what allies do.

US: Best purchases and movement to get the US involved Atlantic/Eurpope was asap?
2 trans/6 inf/2art optimizes US land deployment. 1 Car/1trans/inf is safer and probably recommended if you’re not experienced. R1 and after, generally buy 1 trans and land units. The first priority for USA is to land units in africa and remove Axis from Africa.

Rule: Can a player place a naval unit during the placement phase in a hostile seazone?
Yes

Some of these quesion may seem basic however, including myself the returning players have not played for years and we want to help the new guys as best as possible. Asking for some different options will do this as some of the older players are stuck in their turn 1 ways.

Tanks are important, but as the others have said you need plenty of infantry to absorb any losses.

What an IPM approach allows you to do is take territories without a battle. You leverage your shear numbers (both attack threat potential and defensive numbers) and force your opponent back. You only need enough offense to prevent your opponent from doing the same to you and in the case of Germany after round 1 you’ll have 4-5 ftrs, 1 bom, and a half dozen tanks or so. You don’t need any more offense. You need fodder!
So with IPM you want to start getting as many units on the board as possible and start shifting the deadzones out (moving them closer to Russia).
First you stack EE, then you look to move that stack to Bel. From here Russia has a choice, defend Kar or flee to Wrus. They will likely eventually move back to Wrus since that is far more important and the Bel stack can threaten Wrus directly as well. So now you’ve gained Kar and have successfully deadzoned it since any units that land there can be hit by your EE or Bel stacks. Wrus is usually a tough nut to crack so your next target is either the shift of your EE stack to Kar or the movement of the Bel stack to Ukr, EE stack to Bel, Ger stack to EE. Here you threaten Cauc and Wrus. Again Russia must choose which to defend and thus you’ll gain another deadzone and find you next target (either Cauc or Wrus).

B/c of your tanks movement you can station them in France (for defense) with the least amount of infantry possible to deter attack. Then as you move your infantry from Ger to EE to Bel to Ukr in 3 turns you can get your armor there in two. 1 turn to EE, 1 turn to ukr (or wrus). Although you may need to keep them in EE for protection and to help deter an assault on Fra. As you move your armor out of Fra, you may need to shift more ftrs there for defense. But their movement still allows trading on the Eastern front. Typically 2 ftrs in fra, 2 in EE would allow swapping of postions during each attack phase depending on where you need your strong defenders.

On the flip side Russia will be trying to push its way to Bel which will hold Germany progress at EE and then you just wait for the UK/US numbers to add up and push to EE. The Russian stacks will then go from Cauc/Mos to Wrus to Bel. So your armor should be stationed in Wrus. Not only to threaten Germany from advancing but can also reach the backside of Russia to protect against Japan.

The bottom line is it is cheaper to defend, 3 ipcs get you a defensive roll of 2. In order to “kill” that unit the other side must spend more than 3 ipcs. Larger scale battles put the ratio at 3:4 or 5 in terms of what the attacker needs to spend. So it is just cheaper and easier to move defensive stacks forcing your opponent to spend more to try and kill you. The simple way to look at it is to kill an inf you’d need at least 1 rt to attack. Even 2 inf plus planes costs 6 ipc. :wink:

Submarine have to face a round of fire from the attacking aircraft, then, if it has not been hit, at the end of the round it can submerge.

All Submerged submarines resurface at the end of the turn of the power in which turn they had been submerged. Example: UK aircraft attack a German submarine and miss. The German submarine then submerges. The submarine resurfaces at the end of the UK turn.

When you download the file, change the ending to .map or .aam. If it is a 2nd edition game, change it to .map. If it is an AAR game change it to .aam. Then you will be able to open the file from your “file” menu in AABattlemap.

I’ve used them a few times to bomb Germany into the stone age. Especially on a KJF strategy.

England pumping out 1 or 2 bombers a round up to 3, America keeping 2 or 3 bombers in England and then blowing the heck outta both Germany facilities will severely limit his production. Heck, 6 bombers vs Germany herself is still 20 damage, that’s 6.66 infantry they are not buying to prosecute the war. And remember, those rounds you don’t loose a bomber, you don’t build one, you build fighters or transports or land units instead.

Meanwhile, America is more then capable of taking out Japan. If Japan switches to building navy they do not have the man power to make significant gains against Russia/America/British stonewalling and thus America can easily out produce them, especially when America starts grabbing islands.

Eh but 2 does not state it has to be a combat move. And since submarines threat hostile seazones as friendly the zone is effectively not a hostile zone and number 3 allows the movement. I would say Yes to question 3 based on this. Moving through a friendly seazone is not considered a combat move and the SZ not containing destroyers is effectively a friendly seazone for a sub.

Well, I’d be willing to advocate both views. As I quoted submarines treat hostile sea zones as friendly, but that statement is under “combat movement phase”. Looking under “ncm phase” this is not repeated, in fact, it states that NO sea units may move through hostile sea zones EXCEPT in the case of enemy submerged submarines.

Might be worth looking more into, but I assume mostly for theoretical interest.

Yes, it does take 2 turns.

When you board an allied TRN, once on board you are “cargo” of the TRN. That means that, upon boarding, you are part of the TRN, and your further movement passes to the TRN. Then, on your nation’s NEXT turn, you can offload.

OM Page 31 :

Being carried on a transport counts as the land units entire move; it cannot move before loading or after offloading.

(emphasis added)
Boarding is movement. Offloading is movement. Therefore, you cannot board, and them make another mvoement to offload in the same turn.

The real kicker for clarification is in LHTR.
LHTR uses the same wording in the description of transports… with one MAJOR clarification…

Land units belonging to friendly powers must load in their controllers turn, be carried on your turn, and offload on a later turn of their controller.
