the one thing I’m struggling with most right now is how to stop KJF while pushing to India…when my friends and I play out-of-the-box, we almost never declared war early with Japan, but online has taught me that that is a suboptimal strategy. However, since I’m new to the more aggressive Japan, I find myself trapped by 20-destroyer armies while I slowly get money-drained. Any advice would be very helpful.
…Maybe I should just not really care about India stacking infantry and build up my navy much more first…then start pumping out factories and men on the main land once I have the sea secured. But then I get worried about China going nuts (with India’s help) if I’m not spending enough money on land.
Great questions about Japan - I feel that you have to try to match the Allied fleet in carriers, because with twenty aircraft to start the game, the fleet is incredibly potent. Transports are huge, making sure you always have the ability to take back the DEI if possible.
My favorite thing to do is make sure I always buy destroyers, at least 2 -3 per round once the allies are all engaged in the war. Because of naval bases, they have a ton of flexibility to act as blockers.
I personally try to work China over and get the DEI/Philippines first, then shift toward India. I usually don’t worry about killing India, just try to starve them out and make them a non factor. Nobody wins as Axis with a Pacific victory, so the deal is to expand as quickly as possible and keep the allies engaged while Germany and Italy are expanding. I try to see Japan as more of an anvil, and the European Axis as the hammer :) The trick is to stay as relevant as long as possible - over time the Allies are going to wear you out.
I also try to mix the purchase of infantry with mech infantry about 50/50. Speed is important, but it costs money. You get four infantry for every three mech, and if your opponent is buying more units… that’s what happened between you and I in a nutshell - I just wore you down with volume, even though you had way more quality.
I’d like to shift to the Axis if that’s ok with you - I don’t mind bouncing back and forth in a series.

I’ve recently learned from bmnielsen (a current game) that you don’t need much of a factory presence with Japan to be able to do a lot of mainland damage. He’s gone all fleet for the first four rounds - scary. You should check out the game between us - he’s kicking my butt in the Pacific right now :-)
A big part of it is where to move your fleet, and when, and how many transports to have at your disposal. And a huge part is recognizing that you can leave your troops on your boats, and position them so the allies can’t stop you from taking the DEI, Malaya, and the Philippines all in one fell swoop. Check out the two games between Infrastructure and I to see two variations on early Japanese positioning. I’m not saying it’s the only way to go, but it gives a roadmap.
I’ve recently realized - IC on J1, and perhaps not another until J4 or later, depending on how heavy the allies force your hand in the pacific.
