1st Annual Cellar Gaming TripleA Octathalon – Sign-Up Thread

    @Balladeer:

I’m intrigued but unsure, I’d be new to all of the games, would the brackets all be started at the same time (so I’d get 8 new games with 8 sets of rules I have to learn)?

Hi Balladeer!  In essence, the plan is to start the brackets one per day starting on December 15.  However, play during the first round will be slower for two reasons.  One, a lot of us are in the same boat as you regarding new maps.  :-D  Another is the fact that it’s the holidays, so turns will be moving slowly during that time of a “learning curve.”

In addition, the slots are drawn at random.  So, unless there is an exact factor of 2 that enter each tournament (8, 16, 32, 64), there will be first round byes, and you won’t have games in all 8 brackets ever going at the same time (well, unless you keep winning, but then that’s your own fault.  :-P  And even then you will have down time waiting for other games to finish, etc.)

An example of this is if there were 24 players in a certain bracket.  In that case there would be 8 first round matches and 8 byes, so that 1/3 of the players would get a first round bye in that bracket.

Also, I am currently in the process of finding as much detail as I can (via the TripleA sites and other places) on each game, and I will be posting my findings on the Cellar Gaming message boards as I find them, so hopefully that will help with understanding the initial strategy and so forth.  The general page is at this link:  http://cellargaming.com/phpbb/index.php  You only have to join the board if you want to add your own posts (and feel free!), otherwise you can stalk at will.  :)

Does that fully answer your question?  Sorry, shockingly I got to rambling a bit….

And always remember that you don’t have to enter all of the brackets – you can enter as many as you like.  Of course, the more you enter the more chances you have to win points towards the Octathalon standings.

Allright, count me in, I’ll let you know which brackets.

Who wants to try World at War with me?

If you’re new to the game and would like to learn about it, I’ll play a game with you.

For those newer to these games that do not have the maps downloaded to TripleA, I have included a picture of the map [a glorified screenshot – of course having the game downloaded shows it better] along with the game description for each:

    World At War
    New World Order
    The Rising Sun
    Great War
    270BC
    Total Ancient War
    Red Sun Over China
    Napoleonic Empires

I’ll be posting more tip and strategies on those links as well (as I find them – if you know of any feel free to let me know!).

Heck, add me in for the Great War and Total Ancient War

  • '20 '18 '17 '15

Actually, remove Total ancient war.  Gonna have to test that out a bit more first before signing on.

  • '20 '18 '17 '15

Okay, I checked it out.  Totally awesome.  I’m in for 270 BC and Total Ancient War!

  • Red Sun Over China
I’m not sure if I understand the concept of this game.
as china do I try to hold off japan for so many turns?
and as japan do I have so many turns to take china over?
I played both on hard and not sure of the win concept?

I think the game is played until domination occurs or someone cries Uncle, similar to how we play WaW.  :)

From what I have seen, the game can either end quickly if a front breaks down, or it can last for many turns and become a production war.  The game options we will be playing will have 3 boxes checked:

    National Objectives
    Always on AA
Battleships repair at beginning of round (NOT at end)

dawg, you want to play one with me for practice?  I could use it too, since I’ve only played the computer so far.

  • I would love to play.

Sounds cool.  So, we’ll roll for sides just like the tourney.  :)

Even, Dizz is Allies, odd Axis:

    sounds awesome

    Tournament Note:

The Nationalist factories for Red Sun Over China were not working as intended.  In fact, they were not working at all (other than in the capital).  I have changed the XML to make these work as normal factories (ignore the notes about them starting out as damaged).  The new map to be downloaded can be found here:

    http://cellargaming.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8

This is NOT the same as what is at the depot!  Dawg and I are testing this, and there may be some small changes – if I make more modifications I will let you know.  I will see about uploading it to the depot at TripleA, but I figured that we could test it here first.  This should make the game flow much better now – awesome map!

    Okay, so for another update:

I thought that Red Sun Over China was ready to play because I had played it on an old TripleA engine.  Apparently some of the new engine changes broke some of the features.  So, my play is to be fixing those so that we can play the map for next year.

However, as dawgoneit pointed out to me, it becomes very confusing to have so many player enforced rules as it currently stands.  It’s fine to have a few, but not as many as we would have to go with.  So, I think we should table that and see if I can get that XML working by next December.

In the meantime, are you guys up for changing that bracket to the Lord Of The Rings map?  I will transfer over the Red Sun Over China entries to that one, so if you would like to play and weren’t signed up (or don’t want to play and were signed up) just let me know.

So, does that change work?  Just over two weeks until the first bracket is set!

  • sounds good to me.
I do hope you can fix the red sun over china.
it will be a fun game
