• So i am flying to Atlanta Ga for an airway course (http://www.theairwaysite.com/emergency.html) for the weekend of November 16-22.  Anyone have any suggestions on:

    1. things to do
    2. places to eat
    3. people to meet
      ???
      Happy to hear from y’all,
      CC

  • Ive never been to Atlanta.  Closest ive ever been to Atlanta was probaly 200 miles, which was actually on a bus going to Miami.  The only thing I can suggest in the “things to do” department, is to go visit the Coca Cola factory.  You can also try to catch Michael Vick praticing at the football stadium.

Go to Andersonville.  It’s the Confederate Concentration Camp that held over 38,000 Union POWs.  Very famous and it’s a very neat museum!  I got to go while I was interred at Fort Benning.

It’ll really open your eyes as to what life was like back then!  They have a little section dedicated to torture US Soldiers have endured in the various wars as well.  But the really neat part is where you are driven the circumfrence of the camp (26 Acres) and shown the “stream” that provided water to the soldiers.

Yea I heard about that one before.  Also I think there was an equally horrible camp for Confederate POWs somewhere in Illinois.  Crazy stuff.

There were horrible camps for Confederates in TN, IN, MD and Maine.  But I don’t think any of them were that bad (probably because we had the industry and the farms for staples to provide for them, whereas the south did not.)

  • Try Savannah, GA, or Hilton Head, SC, if you can take enough time to go.  Just walking around would be enough to do.

  • Try Marta from Hartsfield, and travel to the 5 points transit center.
It should take you near the Coca Cola museum at 5 points mall.

Marta is much cleaner than most trains I have been on.
It hits all of the pro sporting venues.

    The Braves are often popular.

That mall over a decade ago had a beach volley ball court.  Sometimes co-ed.

The fancy clubs are in Buckhead, fancy homes are in Sandy Springs.

They also have many Habitat for Humanity chapters there if you want to meet quality ladies who can take care of the structure of your home.

I played A&A and other strategy games at the Georgia Tech Campus, most of my friends in that group flunked out or transferred to easier schools.

Very useful stuff - thanks a lot.
you too JF - i’m not sure if i’ll have quite enough time for Savannah, but it sounds like a nice idea.
Any civil war sites of interest nearby?  (i’d like to make my dad jealous by visiting more sites than he did).

Other then the sites in Atlanta where General Sherman marched too and burned down?  As I said, Andersonville is close to Atlanta.  Other then that, most of the fighting was done well north of Georgia.

  • ATL rocks!! Don’t EAT CHINEASE FOOD. they have the worst there Pizza sucks too unless you like pizza hut type stuff. P.F. Chang is rather costly but is the only place with good chinease food. Marata is very limited to just the Atlanta area. I’ve never been to a national park or war museum before so can’t help you there. but other things you van visit are the king center(i visited it before it was sold know idea what happened and the coke factory. the GA aquarium is very impressive if you don’t mind crowds and the feeling of being herdead.YOU MUST BUY TICKETS ONLINE IN ADVANCED. there is a nasty tasting waffle house on every corner. i have know idea where your from but the have Steak and Shake and Sonic two things they don’t have up north.

Stone Mtn is a nat’l park to the east.

    http://www.stonemountainpark.com/maps-directions/map-to-park.aspx

Stone Mtn does evening laser shows in the summer.  I have never been there in Nov.  The focus is a huge round rock protrusion where they carved out images of Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and some other Confed leader.  It is high enough to be noticed from about 2 miles out or more.  The park features many park activities for a fee.

It is too far out for transit so you need a ride or a rental car.  Worth going to if you have a car and the travel time.

You can find more locales about civil rights than the civil war within the Marta transit system.
I do recall a few years back, someone took me on a tour of the home of the author who wrote “Gone with the Wind”.  It has more to do with Antebellum style than the civil war.  Nice place to bring a date though.  I spent a few to buy silk GWTW bookmarks.  I have moved twice since, and they are lost in my moving boxes. :(

    CC,

I assume that you have returned from Atlanta?
Were you able to use the info?
It’s OK to admit that you want to go back…

  • If your in Atlanta dont go outside after lockdown…and keep your hand on your wallet.

  • Find yourself a helicopter pilot, because every street is Peachtree.

  • 2007 AAR League

The Atlanta Underground and Coca Cola Pavillion are pretty popular destinations for first time visitors.  If you get a chance Dante’s Down the Hatch is popular restaurant & Jazz club, it’s laid out like an old Spanish Galleon.  It’s located…where else…on Peachtree.

  • @jsp4563:

    It’s located…where else…on Peachtree.

In other words it is SOMEWHERE within a 50 mile radius of the center of Atlanta.

I never SAW so many peachtrees…

    Peachtree Circle
    Peachtree Ave
    Peachtree Lane
    Peachtree St.
    Peachtree Rd.
    Peachtree Hwy…

and they are all totally seperate and distinct roads!

  • Good trip, learned a lot, nice people, good food, etc.  I went to the CNN building, and saw some great art at the art museum (including a Louvre exhibit).

i went to the underground - skipped the coca cola pavillion.  Dante’s was great - great food and service, and a fun ambiance.  i didn’t get to meet Dante - another time . . . .
