    CAP = Cover Air Patrol

With CAP your planes are able to attack incomming enemy fighters and bombers BEFORE they hit your land units/factories/ships.

When your fighters are on waterfront property, and friendly warships are in that sea zone, you must declare if your fighters are flying cover air patrol for the land territory or the adjacant sea zone.

Fighters on cover air patrol roll as defending fighters against enemy fighters invading.  These fighters also roll as defending fighters.  (ie, both sides roll to hit on a 4 or less.  To simulate dog-fighting and to make the battle faster…if you roll to hit on 1s or less you’ll be there all day rolling a 10 fighter vs 10 fighter battle!)

Defending bombers CANNOT fly cover air patrol.

Cover Air Patrol must penetrate all attacking fighters before they can engage enemy bombers on SBR.  If enemy fighters are supporting an invasion, then CAP cannot engage bombers on SBR, they are otherwise engaged on the “front lines.”

If you have the Jet Power technology, your CAP attacks at a 5 or less to hit.

CAP engagements are determined BEFORE land combat.  Any surviving fighters may engage in the ground campaign or may retreat. (Yes, defending fighters can retreat up to one space.)  If there was no CAP engagement, then defending fighters may not retreat.

CAP occurs BEFORE anti-aircraft fire.  (It is assumed the fighters went to engage the enemy and then what was left is completing the attack run)

    Purpose of the house rule:

Primarily to deter British/American SBR Campaigns on Germany and force an invasion.
Secondarily because what moronic air force general is going to let his fighter fleets sit on the tarmac while the capital cities go up in flames?
Likewise, what moronic air force general is going to let his bomber fleets get shot down when he can launch fighters to protect them.

Basically, this is a good way to tie up air force assets, encourage the construction of air force assets and utilize them in a more meaningful fashion then just escorting infantry on attacks to trade land or defend territories.

  • How bout  “air interdiction” or “air interception” you use of an existing military term CAP=combat air patrol has allready been established in AA pacific.

    otherwise its great.

CAP is also an official USAF term, but we can call it Airiel Interception Patrol (AIP) to avoid confusion.

  • On final point is i have playtested using normal values and it chews up entire air forces in a single combat round. Thats not acceptable. Interception combat should only be one round. If the intention is to stop planes from performing SBR’s or ground support combat missions, then an entirely new concept has to be introduced.

plus jet fighters should not be intercepted by prop jobs.

I propose: one round of combat at reduced values… any survivors can then perform missions. fighters at 2, bombers at 1, if jets are the interceptors they are at 3

playtest that as i have and you will agree. Remember each plane is like 2,500 planes so losing 7,500 planes over france in one 4-6 month turn is a horrible result to live with .

  • Again, great minds think alike.

AARHE have most of your ideas and purposes in our “Defensive Air Support” and “Air Interdiction” respectively.

In fact, with a second opinion (not me, I have no idea) we’ll change them to more historic names straight away.  :-D
