Hey I’d love to see the Rangers play the Lightning, I think beating the Caps will be hard enough. Even though a Caps-Bolts series would have some star power (despite Stamkos’ quiet postseason) I don’t think a matchup of two teams south of the Mason-Dixon Line is good for hockey.

The longer the Rangers stay in the better it will be for TV ratings anyway. NYR-CHI would be a big winner in that respect. Still not sure if I want Chicago to win another or someone new.

Well the Hockey Gods are laughing at the Habs tonight… lots to fix next year if they want to get back on this stage. Please don’t rub it in by saying something like “it’s not over yet”… we’re talking about a team that hasn’t won in 8 straight games against the Lightning and have 17 scoreless periods in these playoffs. What a waste of a career year from their Hart candidate, this team needs a Captain.

But it does seem like small and fast teams like the Rangers and Habs are much better suited for the regular season marathon where they can outskate and outskill different opponents on a nightly basis.

Some might qualify the Chicago Blackhawks as this type of team, but yet, they’ve had great success in the playoffs.

Am I mistaken in my assessment of the Hawks being akin to your description?

When you got Keith, Toews, and Kane (Rodman, Pippen, and Jordan)… you can play anyway you like and still win.

Yeah, neither the Rangers or Habs have that kind of talent. And I don’t watch the Hawks enough but I bet they play bigger than both of those teams.

Montreal in particular has had the reputation of being on the small side. New York is about middle of the road in terms of size, in my opinion. Chicago would be about equivalent to New York, I think.

The real difference being the experience and overall level of star talent. Chicago can beat physical teams because their resilience is borne out of their skill. You can beat on line 1, maybe even line 2, and line 3 can still score. Maybe one or two teams in the NHL can match that. Maybe.

  • As soon as all the Canadian teams are gone as usual by this time of year, this thread will get real quiet quick… lol

Well, well, well… we finally see an appearance from IL and his predictable anti-Canadian observations.

Ha, well I think this is a cause for celebration. Let the entertainment begin!

In general though, you are correct. There is but one left. And they are still on the edge.

It’s the Lightning that’s on the edge!

It would really be something if they can do it. I am rooting for Carey Price. I just want Carey Price to win. The rest of Montreal can lose. As long as Carey Price wins.

Maybe Max Pacioretty. He can win too.

You know that a banana peel is going to be thrown on the ice this evening.  It’s in America after all.

Someone will be convinced that they just have to.

Are you insinuating that the game will be conspiratorially thrown and further play into “The World is Against Us” mentality that has plagued the Canadiens for the past not-sure-how-many years?

No… he’s saying that PK and DSP will get a nice warm Southern welcome. Nothing matters tonight… after the Habs went down 3-0, all the Hab fans I know including myself said “wake me up if there’s a game 7”. Just ask Ottawa how they felt going into game 6 after being down 3-0, than ask them how they felt 3 hours later.

    And sorry for your loss.

Heard an interesting stat last night during the game… we all know that out of the 120 times (or something like that) in which a team went down 3-0 in a playoff series, only 4 times a complete comeback was made. The interesting thing is that only 9 times a game 7 was needed. So when the Habs went down 3-0, history said that they had a very very slim chance of even forcing a game 7… crazy.

A stat I heard a few days ago was that, in the team’s 100-plus year history, the Habs had never previously managed to get to Game 6 of a best-of-7 playoff round after initially being down 3 games to 0.  So in one sense getting to Game 6 was an accomplishment, but in another sense the statistic showed just how steep a hill they had to climb to win the playoff round.

I had a look at a couple of local papers today.  One indirectly conceded and one openly acknowledged that the Canadiens have been relying too much on strong goaltending and good defense to compensate for their lack of offensive power.  One paper said that two of the team’s best players are Price and Subban – a goalie and a defenseman – but noted that the Habs lack a first-rate centre.  This would be fine if hockey could be won by simply keeping the puck out of you own net, but that’s not how the game works.
