The Second season is the best season!
My usual horse came up lame this year, so I am not sure who I am rooting for.
I know more who I am rooting AGAINST…
What a terrible weekend… besides the Wings and Blackhawks winning. My Pool team is basically sunk at this point. It is so frustrating to have that happen before the first round is even over. Now I just root for someone else. Not going to be my wife… she lost more than I did.
You can root for me… I just need Washington to go through and I will have all but 2 boxes active.

You are on my list. There are a few people I would rather not win, but that is just a personal opinion. It is still a little difficult to see who is going to outlast everyone else.
Garg is number one though! But somehow I don’t see that happening.
LOL, well a lot of my players are still online, except they’ve all been the wrong choices…

Ya… I guess it’s asking a lot for you to root for me, especially when a Montreal Detroit round 2 matchup is still possible. 8-)

Feel your pain. I got real frustrated last night after St. Louis lost… just can’t believe that AGAIN I took the wrong teams to advance and now my Pool team is basically shot before the first round is even over.
I am over it now, but this has happened almost every single year that I have done this pool. Which is 6 years now.

Mostly I like to root for people I think would truly appreciate the money or the people who are underdogs or who have never won before.
As far as the pool goes I can root for you the whole way, no qualms there. Who I root for in the pool is totally separate from the team I root for in the playoffs. I picked no Detroit guys (actually picked Tampa ones) but I have never and will never root for Detroit to lose. Similarly, I will be cheering for Detroit against Montreal, if they make it, but I will not be terribly upset if the Canadiens win or you do well in the process. It all works out.
I used to get very upset when Detroit lost in the playoffs, but that was when they were favorites and expected to do very well. Now that they are mostly underdogs and never favored to win, it is easier to accept that they will likely lose. When they win it is just a pleasant surprise.
I have won 3 hockey pools in my life time…
Mens Olympic ice hockey (Salt Lake City), bought a Paul Korea Canada jersey.
2008-09 NHL Playoff Pool, bought a Hamilton Bulldogs Kyle Chipchura jersey
2011-12 NHL Playoff pool, bought a Peterborough Petes Bob Gainey jersey
So I always respect the money rewarded and get a hockey related tresure with any winnings, this year if I’m lucky enough to win, I will be getting a Montreal Canadiens Andre Markov jersey.

Haha! That is a great idea and very worthy spending for pool winnings. I would do the same except that I am not going to win this year.
Believe it or not I do not own an official Red Wings jersey. (Every real fan must have at least one) It is something I have been meaning to rectify for some time now. They are just so damn expensive. I do have an old Yzerman practice jersey and some shirts and so forth, but not a league official Reebok one.
I will be getting a Toledo Walleye one soon! Then I will just have to get my Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins jerseys to complete the Detroit team family.
I hear you, regular sweaters are expensive enough, but when you have make a contribution to the NHLPA to get a player’s name on it the price is almost doubled. Then again the owners wipe the floor with the union during every collective bargaining negotiation so they could use the help.
I just have a classic Ranger blue, I waited for it to get on sale at around $70.
I actually have lots of jerseys dating way back and not just hockey jerseys… I highly recommend that every hockey fan watch this before spending a dime.

I have never been much for memorabilia and autographs. I mean, yeah it is cool if you can get one in person, but buying them? No way. Not worth it. Too hard to authenticate if you plan to sell it in the future. Plus there is just a ridiculous amount of memorabilia out there and much of it is not very special or valuable. Unless an item is truly unique (like Gretzky’s stick that he scored his last goal with or something), I can’t see it being worth that much.
This has even become true of sports cards. I have only ever collected hockey cards, but there are so many inserts and jersey cards and autographs out there… they just are not special anymore. So much so that I do not even care about them anymore. I prefer the simple, aesthetically pleasing cards. Don’t care about the value.
**And as for fake jerseys… I have a friend who has bought a few from the Winter Classic and Olympics and I have been tempted to have him order one for me. The Chinese are the ultimate capitalists now. While I do not like the idea of supporting communist China or any illegal operations, I can certainly see the appeal. The quality of the conterfeit product is vastly improved of late and they are literally less than 1/6 of the price of the authentic item. For someone who doesn’t care to have the ultimate, official, perfect apparel, but something that looks 97 or 99% as good… why not save a ton of money? $300 is a car payment for a normal person.
Like I said, I am not endorsing it one way or the other, but I do understand. And the NHL is just as much a racket as the scam guys, except that they are protected by the law. It is utter extortion because they have a monopoly on the apparel market.**
I agree, sports memorabilia and collectibles are a treacherous enterprise and in my opinion a waste of money. New York must be full of suckers since Steiner Sports regularly hawks “authentic” Yankee Stadium dirt as well as game-used bases (they change the bases every inning!). They had a field day with Jeter’s retirement last year, just stopping short of selling game-worn jocks.
The video below is a classic put-down by the Pope of sports talk radio, Mike Francesa, on a con artist trying to hock an “authentic” Babe Ruth jersey:
just stopping short of selling game-worn jocks.
HA! Now that would be something! Talk about memorabilia.
Ahhhh crap.
No Kronwall. No Zidlicky.
Ericsson and Quincey are Detroit’s top defensemen? Tampa sure lucked out for game 7.

I think there’s a part in the novel The Name of the Rose in which the somewhat cynical Brother William tells his naive young novice Adso that, over the course of his life, he’s seen enough surviving “authentic” pieces of the One True Cross that you’d have enough wood to construct a whole building if you put them togther. Poor Adso (who unlike his master hasn’t been around the block several times) is shocked at the concept that some of the Church’s venerated holy relics might be forgeries.
I was hoping Holtby could get the shut out, but than I realized he got an assist on the first goal… so all said and done, 6 points for YG in game 1 (Sorry, GV… I’m sure NY will bounce back, but I’ve got 4 Caps in my pool and 0 Rangers).
Man it seems like the 2nd rd took forever to get here. We’re back in action now though :)
The Wings are done so now it is little stress and more fun to see what happens.
Not sure who I want to win at this point. I like most of the teams left. Chicago is my favorite, but it would be cool to see someone new hoist the Cup. Like the Caps or Rangers. Canadiens would be cool too, but they already have, what 26?
Hey, for Montreal’s standards 22 years must feel like a century. I’m always making Yankee comparisons with them (they are the best intersport pairing given their histories), and the 1996 team gets to live forever since it ended an 18 year “drought.” This Habs team would have status built for them if they won.
I’m glad my friend got tickets to Avengers two months ago because I’m thankful I didn’t see that atrocious breakdown. Even though it’s only the first game of the series dubious losses like that can haunt a team. I can’t stand the Capitals since DC-based GEICO (purveyors of the most asinine ads in media) shoves DC players (Nationals and Capitals) down our throats in their ads.

You mean 1986… just one digit off. Though it was Roy who won it again in '96.

I always wondered why Geico used Capitals-only players in their ads. I only get to see the hockey ads, which I don’t mind so much. I would much rather watch Nick Backstrom shoot pucks than that stupid geko or annoying pig.
My boys can’t score, the coaching staff had all year to fix the power play before the playoffs… and it’s like 1 for 29.
Game 3 is basically do or die.
