The Second season is the best season!
My usual horse came up lame this year, so I am not sure who I am rooting for.
I know more who I am rooting AGAINST…
LHoffman is right, the last thing I’ll add is I think goaltender padding has increased commensurately with shot speed and stick technology the last few decades. Also was a different game back then. But no argument he’s one of the best in the world right now.
Besides, the Habs are like the Yankees, accomplishments need to be measured in Cups. Their immortal players are on such a high plane (just like the Yankees) it’s impossible to crack the upper echelon.

Agreed, however the way Montreal Canadien and New York Yankee players get measured must change with the times. Back in the day a dynasty was 4 Championships within 5 years, these days a dynasty is 2 championships within 3 years.

I don’t know… I would argue the fact that the LA Kings qualify as a dynasty. Their success has been pretty rapid in the past 3-4 years. And even though they have won championships, they have never been truly dominant (something I take into account for a dynasty). Dynasty also has a connotation of length (greater than 2 championships out of 3). As you said, in today’s NHL it would be next to impossible for a team to win 4 Cups in 5 seasons, but a string of unbroken success, competitiveness at the top of the league and, of course, championships should all factor in.
Under the 2/3 rule, the Kings are a dynasty, yet they didn’t even make the playoffs the year after they won the Cup. In my book Chicago is much closer to a dynasty than LA, and I am sure if the Hawks win this year people will throw that title at them and hope it sticks. A three year sample size is just a little too short to call LA a dynasty in my opinion.
Dynasties may in fact be a thing of the past, at least if we are going to define them by consecutive or near-consecutive championships. The balance of the league is just so much better than it was when the Canadiens, Oilers or Islanders won multiples in a row. I really don’t think it can be done anymore.
Leafs have called up Colton Orr for their final game against the Habs, what a hack organization… totally unprofessional, and irrisponsible to insert a goon like that during the last game against a playoff bound team.
5 out of 7 Canadien teams this year. When’s the last time that happened?

Yeah, I was thinking that too. Different from last year where there was only 1.
Didn’t want Ottawa (hottest team going in) , but what can you do… Hopefully head coaching experience can count for something.
They’re hot, but beatable. The Rangers had no problem humbling the Hamburglar.
The Penguins limped into the playoffs, I just hope the sting of their 3-1 choke job against the Rangers last year doesn’t give them an extra gear to shift to. Rangers have home ice for the playoffs but set a record for road wins, I don’t see why they can’t win in six and clinch on the road.

NY over Pitt… no problem.

No Kris Letang. No defense to speak of. Pretty helpless without either Malkin or Crosby on the ice… I am thinking NYR too.
No one else matters, we all know the Canucks are going to win.

Would have been a nice side story if Torts was still coaching (now that they have drawn Calgary in the 1st round).
Your trash talk is weak Gar, just like your team’s chances.
Canucks and Flames
I bet the riot police are already suiting up :)

I thought that piece on Hillary Clinton was fantastically hilarious. Nearly fell over at work. My dad was having quite a chuckle while my mom was asking me who the guy who wrote it was… because she thought it was so awful and disrespectful.
If either the Habs, Capitals, Black Hawks, or Flames fail… my hockey pool is toast.

That is almost the way you have to play it in order to win. A balanced approach only seems to get you so far. The winners usually are decently heavy on one or two teams…. or they just pick most of the right guys in the boxes.
That is the real key, but the hardest to actually do.
Minnesota went out in the 2nd Round last year, but Zach Parise had more points than Max Pacioretty who went to the 3rd Round with Montreal. (They were choices in the same box)
It is just so hard to predict. You gotta put all your eggs in between 2 and 4 baskets I think.
And I have been so freaking busy the past 4 days that I haven’t even given a thought to my choices yet…

Let us know how you roll this year, also… is Gargantua in again?

He certainly is. His was that marvelous commentary on Hillary Clinton and the US presidential race.
Might take me an extra day to get everyone’s stuff filled out and the first update out, but you will be able to see everyone’s picks as always.
The Hillary Clinton joke went over my head, any context?
