Alright I concede, very good game! You must be the best/second best player I’ve ever played against (hard to gauge low luck and dice), because apart from an unoptimal move in Korea, this was pretty much my A game. I certainly underestimated the elites in the league, and I won’t be accepting such a low bid for the allies again. I’m sure you know that the allies truly need a higher bid than what most people think to reach the axis level.

Anyway good game again, up for a rematch? We could start a few days from now if you prefer, I don’t mind.

GG.  This is the longest game I’ve played as the Axis including tabletop and TripleA live.  And it’s the first time the Russian Africa push worked vrs me (typically my Axis takes Russia early in that scenario, but you kept Russia alive way too long for comfort) which raises some questions about my meta-strategy.

I haven’t played many elites (mostly I’ve been Allies vrs elites), but this was the best Allies challenge so far.  Your bidding strategy, UK1, and meta-strategy were sophisticated and had me worried.

I definitely learned a thing or two over the course of the game.  Perhaps I need a different approach in Europe……  Usually if Allies stack Russia then Axis can win the game by blitzing Africa but that didn’t happen this time.  I suspect that blitzing the interior of Eurasia was not as optimal as it seemed because I missed the opportunity to try to blitz into Africa before your retreating Indians could block me.

You’re right about the Allied bid.  Sometimes I bid a little lower than other elites but that’s usually cause I want to play Allies.  On the other hand, I don’t think we’ve seen a fully optimized Allied strategy yet.  Even your strategy could benefit from more optimization, and you were quite competitive with a 17 bid.

Sure, let’s rematch soon.  I could use more games like this because they are the key to refining strategies.  I’ll probably take a few days off but I’ll pm you when I’m ready.

My allied Europe strategy is based on getting Russia those African territories and swiping Norway with US, and it has been pretty refined so that I don’t really worry about a quick Moscow. I succeeded in doing both in this game, and usually that puts a stop to German expansion and I can focus in the Pacific, but in this one the Italians were a real pain in defending Normandy and your Germany carried on building up and eventually got Moscow. Only extra thing I could do really is convoy Italy, but I had to buy planes with UK for Moscow in the early rounds so that didn’t happen… I think you did exceptionally well as Euro-axis considering the loss of Norway and a rich Moscow.

Yup I’m quite satisfied with my UK1 response to a J1, considering the use of US can open to let UK strike freely in the med on the second round.

Like I said before, your play in Europe was exceptional and you achieved all your goals, and quickly enough, considering the early pressure from US. Any more US investment in Europe would have severe consequences in the Pacific. My Europe strategy seems to work pretty well, and people used to say I was nasty in Pacific so I wonder what I could do to have a better Allied game…

Yeah I want to play Allies as well, because honestly as Axis I rarely get a real challenge, no matter what the bid. When I saw your Axis opening round (which is quite similar to mine), I knew that this was at the very least going to be a tough game, because I know my Allies cannot defeat my Axis. You seem optimistic about finding a better Allied strategy than what we have now, while I think there isn’t much left to improve. Of course, the learning curve is longer for the Allies than for the Axis, but still.

Alright sounds good, I’m sure we’ll have many interesting games in the future. Cheers.

  • strong game, well played guys

adam, i think one refinement could be to not risk your chinese stack in szech like that. i think china fell too fast as a result. i’m also coming to the conclusion that korea just isn’t worth keeping the russian forces tied down in the far east. i know there are pros and cons to keeping them there, and that’s what i used to do all the time, but idk, lately i’ve been finding them withdrawing back to moscow and partially aiding china in kansu and tsinghai to be better.

also, i’m finding your decision for a uk2 taranto questionable. i think, while certainly you blew out the italian navy, you also sacrificed your own. it was quite costly. i feel the italian med can be dealt with far more efficiently a little later, when more of america arrives to the scene and less commitment of capital ships is required to get the job done (to avoid the counterstrike), especially considering that it could be seen early on that zhukov’s intentions were very land-focused (i.e., he didn’t show any signs of wanting to build up his euro fleets). i also think that some of that great spending you did in the pac could’ve been redirected toward further locking the med down with subs and planes in gib (while your main fleet was focused in the north, in taking norway), to prevent italy from breaking out of the convoy with just a dd–and it would’ve at least given you some return on investment for your troubles in blowing out his fleet

anyway, would like to analyze some more but the wife calls lol

good stuff. i look forward to observing your next match up

Yeah I think I should beef up szech a bit more next time, but usually on a J1 especially I get away with it. Japan did have more air in range than usual for szech. However, Japan did have to choose between the air blitz and Malaya/Java, so in the end I think it was pretty even. My reasoning for leaving the 12 inf +2AA in the East is this: there needs to be at least a deterrent force to discourage Japan to take those 3 territories that don’t border Mongolia (5-6 inf) or even to invade Amur and provoke Mongolia also, so might as well leave the 12+AA there to put some pressure in the North and threaten a Korea take.

When you look at it, you can see that I didn’t send much (Zhukov also killed the UK dd in Suez that was supposed to replace one of the figs in 97, pretty brilliant considering the impact). The ideal situation would have been 2 hits total by the Italians for me to conserve the carrier by killing the planes, but I did it to kill the tps that would otherwise get things like Cyprus and to allow US and UK to focus in the North on Norway and ignore Italy for a bit. The fact that Germany didn’t buy air actually encouraged me to attack 97 on UK 2 since the ships weren’t needed as much on defence and I could afford to clean the med. Yeah I should have indeed convoyed Italy, but I really was stretched thin on most fronts, I didn’t have anything to spare.
