It works stand-alone (you vs the AI), but I have NEVER been able to set up a multi-player game over the net with it.

Yeah, the CD-ROM when it first came out was buggy and had all sorts of network problems. Getting a 5 player game going was almost impossible. But with the new patches, especially with the unofficial v4.1 patch, many of the network problems and bugs are fixed and the game is relatively stable. Worth trying, IMHO, if you like playing with 2nd/3rd edition rules.
