I must admit though, I’m still a little in doubt about when to take them and when not to.

For example, if Germany is doing SeaLion it seems better not to (correct me if I’m wrong)? If Russia goes there (early) in this situation, it has just too few units to start contesting Eastern Europe and/or Scandinavia RU3 (assuming GE did sortie into London). Contesting those area’s with Germany seems better than getting into Africa, since the Russian profit is the same or even higher but it also denies Germany valuable IPCs. Maybe in this case get the African NO’s at a later point?

In all the other situations I’d go for African NO’s (except perhaps a G1 DOW?).

Ok…. So another question. What would you consider the best naval defense against 1-3 German subs and 2-4 planes?

I superior force. Use the battle calculator to tell you if they’d win or not, and if they would…don’t move in yet. It’s up to you to place your units in harm’s way. The US has the luxury of waiting until they want to or need to move in without fear of someone attacking their capital.

The “best” naval defense depends on what your strategy is. I find carriers essential in the Pacific, and often judge if I have the upper hand by a carrier count of the Allies vs. Japan. If Japan has 6 loaded carriers to your 2, Japan is probably winning at the moment. In Europe, I tend to go with more offshore rolls if I’m feeling offensive, or just stick with destroyers and strat bombers that can land in Gibraltar and England and hit just about anywhere.

Back to your example. I assume the subs are by Western Germany and the planes are in Normandy or carrier based. I’d ask…why do you NEED to move in to Gibraltar this turn to put your fleet at risk? Wait another round and add 4 more destroyers, another carrier and planes, or other round of purchases to your fleet. Germany usually doesn’t have the same capacity to match your purchases if they want to make progress vs. Russia at all. Take your time and build up, then move in.

One easy rule is to add up hits and attack power. If they have 3 subs and 2 ftr 2 tac, that’s 20 atk and 7 hits. make sure you have 1.5 times the number of hits and you’re probably good. Go in with 12 destroyers. or 2 loaded carriers and 4 dds. Carriers are great because they bring extra 4’s into the fight, and if you’re hard up for money, the UK or France can land their planes on your carrier if you’re thinking pure defense.

No neither is gamey in my book, it’s part of the game that can lead to a victory (should be a 1 or 2 trick pony). Once your group see’s these moves, it’s up to your opponent to do something about it. Our group see’s a couple Italians at the Russian front often, which can help the Germans to push deeper into Russia. So if this is happening the Russians might need to picket with 2-3 inf in key territories, so you have a chance to kill off the Italian ground unit(s). A few Italians can allow you to sack some Russians, or simply bring your German air to the front so the Russians can’t strafe your German stack w/o air cover. Can also get you to Stalingrad or Caucasus faster, but often times it risks your German mech/tanks if the Russians see it and set up a counter. Sometimes Russia has to deal with a 3 ring circus if both Italy and Japan are knocking on the door w/Germany, it is up to the other Allies to even up the score. Even if Moscow falls, it’s all about what they can take with them, and if the western allies are in position to put the hurt on. Besides, if those Italian bombers are picking off Russians, they aren’t helping much in the Med (although the range allows them to threaten both theaters through the Black Sea).

So there is a DEFINITE seperation between invading a Friendly Neutral, and a friendly/allied territory.

That is what we’re currently trying to determine.

A) if the US controls finland (or has fighters there), it’s no longer neutral. It MUST be at war to be in Finland, no other way around it.
B) if any axis power declares war on Russia on the Europe side of the map, Russia is no longer neutral (it’s at war with someone, so it’s a friendly power to the Allies).
C) Declaring War occurs at the beginning of the move phase, and scrambling occurs at the end (at which point Russia is at war with at least one Axis power).

So in your example, as Russia is not neutral, and the US is not neutral, US planes in Finland can scramble to the seazone against an attack on Russia.

Correct, except that TheDefinitiveS said “UK”, not “US”, but that is a minor point. Either way, the scrambling power is at war.

After being attacked, they are no longer neutral, but friendly to the opposite side from their attacker. However, the territory and forces are uncontrolled, as you say. The question at hand is the timing of this status change.

So submerging is not a retreat. Interstesting. After reviewing the rulebook, it’s considered during step 2 the suprise strike. Which technically means by definition that submerging is a form of attack (Either roll dice or submerge). Because it’s during step 6 that you decide to attack or retreat, and then as you repeat step 2, since you have already decided to attack - you can submerge.

What I like about how the rules are written to, is that EACH sub gets to decide whether it fights or submerges. It’s not decided on a grand scale. You can submerge one, and fight/retreat/ with the others. This has come into play during larger naval battles for me.

For us history pedants I’m putting together a spreadsheet detailing the historical allegiances of each Global40 territory as of June 1st in 1939, 1940, 1941 & 1942. May add December 1941 to this.

Some problems here, for example do I treat “Bessarabia” as Bessarabia proper (Romanian in 1940) or Transnistria?

Also, Poland in 1939: strict neutral or pro-Allied? Can we treat the Soviet invasion of East Poland as Stalin “activating” a friendly territory?
