If the Soviet MI from a UK transport in SZ 97 attacks N. Italy and the Italians scramble fighters, it would seem logical that the UK ships defending the the transport could fight back. I checked the rules, but they imply otherwise. If the UK ships cannot defend the UK transport, then I will not attack with a Soviet MI but will wait until the UK turn and attack N. Italy with a UK infantry.

That just seems weird to me. I have never seen it done before and posted a question asking about it.

I ran 4 simulations of the turn using a local game (once with no scramble, once with scrambling 2 Italian fighters, and twice with scrambling two Italian fighters) before taking the actual turn (in which I scrambled 2 Italian fighters). All five runs had exactly the same result: The Soviet MI took N. Italy, no UK transports were lost, and the 2 Italian fighters returned to S. Italy. So the Triplea program and the written rules (at least as I understand them) seem to be in conflict.

Allied parties may not make any joint attacks. This includes amphibious landings. You could have 50 British bbs and Italy could scramble a lone fighter and prevent the assault. Unless of course at least 1 Russian unit (ftr, tac, etc) was in that same sea zone. In which case a battle would occur solely between the Russian unit(s) and any Italian/German scramblers.
Nothing happens to the British transport regardless of any sea battle that may or may not occur based on scrambling. And a scramble or lost battle would just keep the Russians on the transport. They don’t die, they’ll just stew on the transport complaining about a lack of a real drink like vodka and wondering what the big deal about tea was.
Right. I would just point out that the Italians have to actually scramble to stop it (commit at least 1 plane). But axisandalliesplayer is right - once the Italians scramble, it stops the Russians from unloading and no dice are rolled - no combat occurs - the Russians stay on the transport.
Here are the replies I got to my question in the global forum. I guess it is another one of the things the triplea program allows to happen that is in conflict.

Thought invading N. Italy with a Soviet MI might be too good to be true. This why I simulate the turn locally, four times no less. So clearly, triplea has yet another program.
If the rules are correct and the program is wrong, then please put the Soviet MI back in Greece and subtract 7 from the Soviet IPCs. (There is no sense in the Soviet MI simply sitting in a UK transport.) Thanks.

I am attacking the 2 German infantry and artillery in France with five planes from SZ 97 and a fighter from the UK. However, Triplea will not allow this. I have checked with a moderator, and he indicated that it was yet another flaw in Triplea (see exchange below). So I will edit the result of the battle in.
