Of course there it that story from, I believe the hundred years war, where the brits waved two fingers at the french who had thretened to cut them off. But even so that was two fingers not just one. :)

Well, maybe this isn’t as clear cut as I thought the answer was. It’s true that it’s not known for sure, but the French/British connection is supposed to be generally accepted source. Brit longbowmen were fantastic archers, so captured Brits had their middle fingers cut off (by the French) to keep them from using bows ever again. In defiance, English archers would hold up their middle finger to show the French they were still useable. And yes, dezrtfish is right, two fingers were also used. Ok, so, bad question….

Colonel Benedict Arnold attacked… ooh good one. You got me stumped on a Revolutionary War question GG! This is my time period…
The purpose of Arnold’s attack was to distract the Revolutionaries, cause a little havoc, and hopefully draw George Washington’s army to the other side of the Hudson, where General Clinton’s army in New York would be able to come out and corner him.

The American Crisis was read the night before the Battle of Trenton. The Declaration was read right before the Battle of Brooklyn (which is what I think you ment to say when you said Staten Island).
