I’ve seen it happen multiple times in SZ6 around Japan, where a massive US-fleet first sends precisely those units ( sub+air+tt ) in an amphibious assault because they can’t be targetted by kamikaze. After the amphibious assault, the rest of the fleet moves in during noncombat.
What round 1 battle do you dread most?

Paris by far and away Paris. I know the battle is low-risk high reward, but if Germany doesn’t take it or atleast set it up so Italy can then the game is lost that fast before G2.

China’s counter on Yunnan turn 1. Not even a close 2nd for me. Losing that one is a kick in the nads and you have to go ultra heavy to get reasonable odds. God I hate that fight.
