    Been following the “true cost of units” thread, your comments are well thought out and clear.

    I’m not sure my math skills are strong enough, but if you can keep it simple, why do you say the optimal build is 5 subs to each loaded CV?

    I can understand soaking hits, but doesn’t the number of subs have more to do with the opponents number of DDs?  My thinking is that you can’t risk having your valuable ships getting crushed by enemy airpower if he can attack without destroyers.  Otherwise, arn’t you stuck building DDs because they can defend against air and subs?

    The exact formula is quite complicated, but I can try to explain the general idea.

    I’m only talking about pure defense now.

    Destroyers: 1/8 hp and 1/4 dmg per IPC.
    Cruisers: 1/12 hp and 1/4 dmg per IPC.
    Submarines: 1/6 hp and 1/6 dmg per IPC
    Carrier+2Fighters: 1/9 hp and 5/18 dmg (0.2777…) per IPC
    Battleships: 1/10 hp and 1/5 dmg per IPC.

    So what these numbers say: Destroyers offer the best combination of hp and dmg IPC-wise, while carriers are quite close.
    BUT: After the first round of battle, battleships and especially carriers are stronger than destroyers.

    Now with my formula I can calculate the perfect combination for defense. Carriers are the best defensive units, if you can manage that the fighters survive as long as possible. Having cheap submarines as cannon fodder is worth more than destroyers with slightly less dmg but a lot more cost (33% more expensive!). The best combination is 5 subs for every full carrier.

    Now of course that’s not everything. You need to have at least one destroyer against the enemy submarines. And you also need to be prepared to a air-only attack. Since you have full carriers anyway, just build as much destroyers as possible to have good chances at surviving against air-only.
    Battleships instead of destroyers are acceptable, as long as you have enough destroyers as cannon fodder for air-only.

    Yeah that’s a tricky thing. If the opponent attacks without a destroyer, that’s basically some kind of air-only attack, since you can’t take subs as casualties from his planes. Just make sure to have enough destroyers/battleships with your carriers for this case.

    Now that was defense only. But since you also want to threaten a counterattack and convoy, submarines are super important. Another advantage of having mainly subs/carriers is that you can use your fleet very effectively once the naval war is over - subs for convoy and the fighters on land.

    Yeah it’s looking very, very well for me.
    You could have held Moscow for at least one additional turn, had you not decided to give up on it. That move was really weird.

    My thinking was that by retreating I might actually catch your mechanaized forces in the south on a retreat to hold Egypt.

    I really don’t see Moscow as the end of the game, so I wanted that army to hold Caucus/Middle east. My issue, as I saw it, was that the western allies could make no progress into Western Europe.
