I went when I was really young. I think I mainly visited resorts and amusement parks.
Puerto Rico
-
“Puerto Rico is a self-governing commonwealth in association with the United States. The chief of state is the President of the United States of America. The head of government is an elected Governor. There are two legislative chambers: the House of Representatives, 51 seats, and the Senate, 27 seats.”
http://welcome.topuertorico.org/government.shtmlShould Puerto Rico try and become a state, it’s own country, or stay as a terrirtory of the US? Post your ideas here.
-
I believe they’ve voted to remain a territory believing that was their best interest. Hard to argue with them about that since they know their situation better than I do.
-
i dont understand this situation but if portoricans are nation
than they should be allowed to form their own state
-
Amon,
They were considering applying for statehood with the US, but that all ran amuck years ago…they are their own nation but we are done with the state aquiring business, unless Canada is up for sale :D
-
in all seriousness, i think one of the bigger reasons (among others) is that people are wary of going from a nice, solid, strong, and round number like 50 states to 51. that would just throw a wrench into the works for some people, and i think its just a psychological barrier that is holding them back (again, among other reasons)
-
why would they want to change? as far as i know, they dont have to pay taxes, but they have all the benefits of american citicens(except voting) and, if anyone were to bug them, we would blast them into another dimension.
-
Puerto Rico will make up its own mind. They’ve stayed the same because they enjoy many of the benefits with little of the negative consequences applying for full statehood would possibly create. I don’t think it has anything to do with going from 50 to 51 states or anything, it’s not as if the Senate has denied a formal statehood request.
-
like i said, other reasons of course, and i think its psychological. i dont think anyone has put it in writing, or even said it aloud. just my opinion
-
Well then I think we should find four more territories to bring in. Or even better divide California up into a couple states. I would say divide texas, but that’ll never happen.
-
against the constitution. you cant take land from a state to make a new one.
you could change it with a constitutional amendment, but try getting that passed.

As a resident of NorCal let me say I’d absolutely LOVE that solution. The state assembly voted on it years ago (divinding into North CA and South CA) it failed by a narrow margin. Since then the preponderance of votes has grown in the south so it’ll never be closer- they’ve got too much to lose. I really would love to jettison those idiots down south…yeah that’s a generalization, but I’m ok with it :)
-
just one questionn
when calculating usa population and ,land area and its statistic
is portorico in it or not
-
I’m not sure for certain but my inclination is to say it is not normally included.
-
yes it somehow seems logical

What about West Virginia?
-
I think one could argue that West Virginia is a special case since it was split up during the Civil War…dividing a rebellious state into a loyal and unloyal state does make some sense.
-
from what i understand, W.Virginia entered illegally, therefore, it shouldnt be a state. Of course, you all know that this is a VERY biased opinion. :)
-
If they create their own nation…and have trouble…are we going to have another Mexico on our hands? More people to stop at the border?
-
It’s an island so that’s not really a problem.

True, but you would think that after the war was over they would have been reunited… like the country was.
