    Hey gamerman and allweneedislove, another match I am following (I am really a big fan of allweneeds J1/J2 abd (I would say successfully so far) copied them in a private game against a friend). Hope you don’t mind asking me some further questions.

    o my understanding so far the pacific dynamic is imo the most complex and most difficult element in A&A at all.

    My question is: I was a bit surprised you were relieved about Japan not dropping 14 ground to Australia. The problem I see with that move is:

    • I do not see any chance to successfully take Sidney with these forces without reinformencements which would imo take very long to collect
    • the fleet required to protect the transports is then somehow off the action
    • Not killing the Guam fighters would imo bring Japan in trouble if US stacks at Caroline (The Carrier SZ would not have to wait for new air to be built)
    • Not taking money islands/Malaya could leave Japan with imo too little income once the India boost is used

    So strategically I am not sure whether it could be better just to keep Japan strong, hold the US off and throw everything to Europe.

    But, I have to say that Europe situation is still unclear to me. So far almost no game I observed (10-20) was won by an Pacific VC for axis. Not sure whether this could be the only chance for Axis to win.

    To be honest, while writing the posts I saw more and more benefits of dropping the ground, but I am still not sure whether the “classical” move could still be better?

    So I probably just simply ask: Gamerman, you would have dropped the 14 ground to Australia J4?
    Allweneedislove: What do you think? Did you miss an opportunity or did you leave it on purpose?

    Allweneed and I often kid around about strategy, as part of our gamesmanship.  Like when Allweneed asked if I wanted to lose my planes in 109 (because he would have liked to have destroyed the transport without a fight)

    However, I was in fact worried about him going to Australia, because if he could get to NSW, he would probably win, and I am doing better in Europe than in the past 2 games, so I absolutely did not want to lose this game in the Pacific on round 6 or 7 or whatever!

    The worry I had was that I could not counter-attack, so then he could bring in his airforce to land in Australia the following turn, and I think he had a good chance to take the 6th victory city in just a few turns.
    Maybe it was a low chance, but it did worry me.
    I don’t remember clearly, but I think I left 4 fighters on Guam mainly because it would require several of the transports to go away from South Asia, the money islands, and Australia and would require a fair amount of force to prevent the scramble.  There is no naval base in Guam.  Also, if he ignores Guam, the fighters can get to Queensland in one turn, or could threaten fleet/transports in the area the next turn.

    I do not regreat leaving the 4 fighters on Guam even in hindsight.  My philosophy with the Allies is that the Allies need to get involved and need to get the Axis powers to deviate from their main game plan.

    So again, if I was actually playing Japan for that turn I would have invaded Australia with all 14 ground units only if I could calculate that I had a high chance of taking and holding NSW for a turn and winning the game.

    And I agree that the decision cannot be made in the vacuum and depends on the situation in Europe.

    I agree that Europe does not look to great this game for Allweneed. Russia seems tough and UK is a real nuisance probably avoiding to get sufficiently grip on Russia while still defending enough in the west.

    So I assume you would agree that the attack becomes more attractive the more you depend on a Pacific VC win (which I guess is harder to achieve than Europe). If Europe would be stronger for axis the conservative line would be better because you just want to keep a certain balance in the Pacific not allowing US to throw everything on Europe while have some capacities to threaten Europe from the East.

    I couldn’t agree more! To use a metapher I would say that you kill the Axis with 5 poisoned small daggers rather than a battle axe ;)

    I have an interesting situation in a current game I play against a friend. I am super strong in Europe, Russia will with no doubt fall G5 (We are G3 but it is already really inevitable) and a mistake of my inexperienced opponent would allow me to take Sidney by an 78% chance collecting his 22 income (he saved 8 during his last purchase). However Anzac could retake next turn, so it would be a simple IPC move rather than a VC claim.

    I am still reluctant to do it because I - with my little experience -  think that the Japanese fleet or significant parts of it “does not belong” anywhere else but the SZ37,36(naval build), Philippines - Japan - Caroline - triangle.
    Get the money islands, stay strong and threaten India to fall and thus threaten to support Germany from the East once Moscow falls and Axis plays for Egypt to win. Seems the safest option to me but time will tell :)
    I am furthermore reluctant to invade Anzac because the move could have so easily be prevented by a blocking move and it does not help me to get better to exploit moves an experienced player would never ever have allowed.

    i agree the pacific is the most dynamic and fun part of any aaa game yet.

    if i took australia i would need all the airforce there and not hold india. if this happened it was a one shot at winning but if not then japan would be screwed.

    I don’t remember clearly, but I think I left 4 fighters on Guam mainly because it would require several of the transports to go away from South Asia, the money islands, and Australia and would require a fair amount of force to prevent the scramble.  There is no naval base in Guam.  Also, if he ignores Guam, the fighters can get to Queensland in one turn, or could threaten fleet/transports in the area the next turn.

    I do not regreat leaving the 4 fighters on Guam even in hindsight.  My philosophy with the Allies is that the Allies need to get involved and need to get the Axis powers to deviate from their main game plan.

    the fighters in guam was an interesting move, and a good one. i had mocked out 2 turns one with attacking guam and the other with taking the money islands. it cost me a whole turn of pace, but i think it was worth it.
