Hmm, well, Indiana has a wealth tax and property taxes.  But like, for instance, I pay $8,439.00 a year in property taxes on my $250,000 house in Schaumburg, IL (but because I am in Palatine Township and there are is a severe lacking in school shootings in our township schools…) The same house, in Noblesville, IN (similar to where I live) is $413.00 a year in property taxes.

The wealth tax, if I understood the tax code right, is based on your net worth - your liabilities on assets (like a car loan on the value of your car, but the loan cannot exceed the amount of value of the car, else you just don’t count the car as an asset) - $250,000 in assets for a married family is what you are taxed on.  So, unless you own like a yacht, and a mcmansion and possibly a 1938 Rolls Royce, you probably aren’t going to be paying taxes.

  • I’m familiar with estate taxes, but if there is actually a “wealth” or “luxury tax” (a la Monopoly) in some States where you have to pay taxes on your wealth before you are dead, I’m not familiar with how those work or what kind of threshhold of wealth where you would start paying taxes.

As far as I read, this is an annual deal.  So technically, you can lose money over your life if you don’t earn enough but still have incredible wealth.

And for the record, it is probably the easiest tax on the planet!  total from column A - total from column B = column C.  If column C is less than or equal to $250,000 you owe nothing.  If more, then deduct $250,000 from the total, multiply by XX% and send that in to the state for taxes.

Look at that, it’s not even a paragraph!  Let’s see THAT on a 1040EZ form!

  • I don’t know if sales tax is even the easiest tax on the planet, but it’s a lot easier than that wealth tax….

How do you come up with the total for column A??  Don’t you have to have all your assets appraised or something??  :-)

  • '18 '17 '16 '11 Moderator

There are charts, but I think a lot of it is a good faith estimate.  I can’t imaging having to take my jewelry box in and having it all appraised, far easier to say $10,000 in antique and modern jewelry.

Cars, I know, there is a chart for.  Like a $30,000 prius is a class 5 vehicle, you pay $124 in taxes on it the first year and 20% less each additional year until you come down to $7,000 in value (class 1 vehicle) when you pay $20 a year.  (I happen to own a Prius V Wagon, so I had just looked up the numbers.)

I know, I, the ultra conservative, gas and burn the forests and take all the children and animals out back and shoot them with a bolt gun, has a prius.  Hey, I was never that mean, neo-con I was made out to be!  lol.  However, it does warm the cockles of my heart to think of the forest lands being destroyed by the mines that mine the minerals to make the Prius (and other hybrid) batteries in Canada!  Not that I am anti forest, I am just anti yuppy snobs thinking they are better than everyone else because they drive a hybrid!  (and all pine trees must die.  If it’s green in the winter when there is snow around, it is infested with demons and must die!)

  • Thanks for the warning, IL

Welcome to IL, vote early, vote often!

    Getting confusing…

  • Jenn’s fault!  She was the first to use IL in a second way!

We all know what the primary meaning of IL is on these boards….

You know… you should require the State of Illinois to change their postal code, IL

  • @Cmdr:

11.25% Sales tax here in crook county

I was in IA once, as I said, Jefferson.  I was in a skirt suit and this gas station fella came up to me wondering why I was dressed in an outfit to be buried in…guessin y’all don’t get dressed up too often, lol!  Then he accused me of being an attorney, like SERIOUSLY?Â

TN seems appealing to me, no income tax at all.

    The South would welcome you.

  • I had Subway last night, no problems.

    @Cmdr:

At least mcdonalds out here doesn’t dump 50 pounds of salt per pound of fries like Wendy’s does out here.

Remember, I live in The People’s Republic of Illinois. We’re just like Detroit, but 40 years lagging in progress!

No one is worse off than Detroit.  No one.

    @Cmdr:

Who ever said subway was fresh meat?  They said eat fresh, well, the onions are probably fresh!  The dirt is definitely fresh!  Ya know, they never said eat fresh FOOD did they? lol.

And Gamerman, I have to say, that is NOT our best and brightest, we have way better!  A certain mayor of a city here in IL who bulldozed an airport in the middle of the night because the owners didn’t want to sell comes to mind, a certain state senator who tells governors what to do and how to do it, or puts them in jail comes to mind.  Said senator’s daughter who never has an opponent when she runs for office, also comes to mind.  lol.

Welcome to IL, vote early, vote often!

So you’d like a dictator that oversteps their boundaries and disregards due process/justice system and runs unopposed?

    Have you tried North Korea?

I think you read too fast and missed something.  Chicago is Detroit 2.0, we have not had time yet to become as bad as Detroit, but we are well on our way and we are doing exactly the same things about it as Detroit did 40 years ago.

Again, I think you may have been reading a bit fast.  It has long been an established ‘rule’ that in Chicago people vote multiple times and even the dead vote.  It’s so common, we don’t even investigate it anymore.  Hell, they found ballot boxes from certain districts when they last dredged the Chicago river, this was back from the 50s and 60s (the boxes.)  North Korea?  Hmm, perhaps it would be more free than the People’s Republic of Illinois, but I think Indiana or Tennessee is closer and not as repressive as North Korea. lol.

    Yes of course!

  • They are, it’s called “Hardcore Pawn” and it’s a somewhat interesting show.  lol

One of the best shows on TV. Every customer that enters is EXACTLY like a typical citizen of Detroit. They all act up and have no reasoning abilities whatsoever.

    Let me get a clip…

I wouldn’t go as far as say one of the BEST shows on TV…I mean, you’re going to throw it in there with Babylon 5, Terra Nova, Doctor Who, Raising Hope (yea I know some of them are cancelled, die, they’re still better on reruns than some of the crud out now!)

Interesting is my word.  Better than okay, not in best category.
