Excuse me for being a little ignorant here, but after reading various posts about different games on the forums, I keep seeing the word Alpha being used. What does this mean?

The development of the ruleset for Europe/Pacific/Global 1940 that lead from the first edition to the second edition was called “Alpha + X”.
No more reason to care about as the second edition rules (+ the latest FAQ) apply.
