There’s no official answer that I know of. A&A is such an abstracted game that, in one sense, it would be meaningless to say that game unit X corresponds to real-world military (or naval) formation Y. Given the scope of A&A Global 1940, however, the various unit types on the map would roughly correspond to large formations if we were to assume that the allocation of units in the rules corresponds to real WWII numbers. As an example, Germany’s invasion of the USSR was carried out with over 150 divisions – so from that perspective, the small number of sculpts on the actual board could at best only correspond to army groups. At that level, it shouldn’t even be possible to differentiate between the components of the army groups, nor even of their consitutent armies or corps; the highest-level tank formations in WWII were, I think, armoured divisions and (one level further down) tank brigades. So one way to look at the game would be to imagine that we’re not actually seeing the military formations themselves, but rather a patchwork picture showing some of the elements of those formations, with some of these elements being high-level ones and others being lower-level ones (like tank brigades).
Does anyone else think tanks are too expensive?

Tanks can definitely fire on aircraft…

That’s what I had always thought too. But now I’m wondering how do they actually fire on aircraft? Are tanks equipped with rocket launchers or something?
-
In addition to the main cannon … most tanks have machine guns.
Since, A&A doesn’t discriminate for the various types of combat (i.e. air to air, surface to surface, air to surface, surface to air) tanks are simply given a 3 or less to hit (offensively). In reality … tanks should be lower when engaging in surface to air combat vs. surface to surface.
The new AAA (Advanced Axis & Allies) impliments this very idea. Sounds like it’s going to be a great game!

Maybe this will help you can buy tanks at 5 per or 2 for 9???
May be we need to change the price costs for buying more than one?
-
Like I said, that would work. :)

These prices could be used for any A&A game or variant but obviously affect bidding.
Inflation-
Inf 4
Rtl/Mar 5
Arm 6
Sub 10
Trn 10
Ftr 15
Dstr 15
Bmr 20
Ac 24
Bshp 32Good for high income games/variants. Ground attack units (Rtl/Mar/Arm) are now proportionately cheaper, all other ratios pretty much the same. Buying less units means more strategy in purchasing and deployment.
Deflation-
Inf 2
Rtl/Mar 3
Arm 4
Sub 6
Trn 6
Ftr 8
Dstr 8
Bmr 10
Ac 12
Bshp 15Good for low income games/variants or if you want to roll lots of dice. Ground attack units (Rtl/Mar/Arm) are now more expensive, you need to increase the arm attack to a 4 or the defense to a 3. Bmr’s, Ac’s and Bshp’s are now a little bit proportionately cheaper.

Sorry, misread the rulebook  . Subs can’t fire on aircraft, right? I hope you can forgive me.

Of course we can. :) Except I forget how air vs. sub combat works.
Nearer to the topic, if a tank attacks a territory (moving one space), can it non-combat move back to the territory it started from?

No, unless the tank retreats during the battle.

@Grigoriy:

Subs cannot fire at aircraft. They can only retreat (if possible) or submerge (if playing 3rd Edition Rules). Thus, if not playing 3rd Edition Rules and there is no where for a sub to retreat to … the sub dies without having to perform combat rolls (auto-kill).

the price of tanks and infantry are perfect, if any thing the infantry are not enough, 1 infantry represents 1 division(20,000-30,000 men) and 1 armor represents 1 tank division(700+ tanks). The infantry have to be fed, armed, transported, and paid, tanks are almost ready to go when they role out of the factory( such as in the battle for stalingrad when t-34s where made a couple of 100 meters from the front line, tank crews would wait outside for a tank to come out, drive it in to the battle and come back 20minutes later to get a new one)

Thanks  . Also, thanks for clearing these things up for me.

I love it when my inf or trn shoots down an enemy bmr! Heh-heh! :D

hahahaha… those are the best moments in the game. I swear, that transport in the E Canadian Sz is a damn fine shot!
