Good point about the Yiridians, lol. They surely “acquired” the technology somehow.
But as for B5, they are only fighting gravity (more realistic for our current real level, of course), while in Star Trek they are creating it via a graviton field. Way cooler, and entirely fair, it IS Science Fiction, after all. ;)

That scientific advances are more even distributed in Star Trek is true, but why is that so unlikely? You trade, you share, you steal, and they are all humanoid, after all, all going into space. The finer points might differ, but the principles…all advanced races will get them. Wasnt there this NG episode where they explained where the humanoid races came from? Seems logical to me that they develop in the same direction, if coming from the same “source”.
I agree, star trek is more distant future and babaylon 5 is more immediate future. I guess I prefer to be able to imagine my grandkids exploring the universe than far distant relatives with no hope of even resembling me anymore doing so!

If all Emperor Palpatine had to do was to get Luke to strike him down to convert him to the darkside, and Luke tried to strike him down (the attempt being the same as the action in his mind and spirit) shouldn’t he have gone back to Endor at the end and made his sister a slave and imprison his best friend as traitors, then declared himself Emperor? How could he STILL be the good guy?

Sorry, I digress. For a 1977 movie, Star Wars was good. Star Trek, however, in my opinion, is far superior since it’s based on magic and not midichlorians or however you spell that. =^_^=

I hope to god you’re not referring to the first Star Trek movie? Have you gone back to re-watch that lately? It is unwatchable in my opinion.
The greatest strength Star Trek has over Star Wars is that after its creator, Gene Roddenberry, made one bad movie, the people around him had enough sense (and courage) to smack his hands away from the controls before he could completely ruin the series, unlike George “franchise-icide” Lucas. It’s really the only reason I think Star Trek has endured as well as it has.
I watched Star Trek TMP recently. It didn’t seem all that bad to me?

TMP is the most ‘hard’ sci-fi of all the Trek films. The most Trek of the franchise. TMP is a decent film. No one has the patience for films like that anymore. Just look at ST:INO II. Just another action movie.
By the way, Patrick Stewart is currently in Montreal to shoot the latest X-Men movie. There’s a picture of him in today’s print edition of one of the local papers, showing him somewhere downtown in ordinary street clothes with a newspaper under his arm. I doubt that I would have recognized or even noticed him if I’d passed by him on the sidewalk.

As far as I am concerned, Star Trek II was the first Star Trek Movie…you mean there was one before it? Nah, I won’t believe it.

The other major problem when assessing the first Star Trek movie is that it is in the unfortunate position of having to be compared to The Wrath of Khan. In that light TMP can only look bad, especially when you consider that Wrath has the famous “death” of Mr. Spock. I’m sure when compared to other Sci-fi films of its era, like Odessy it;s a good film, that dosn’t make it any less boring, but objectively i’m sure it will hold up.
The other thing to remember is that Star Trek TMP, wasn’t given the go ahead by Paramount not to be another “hard” sci-fi film, but to capitalize on the bump in popularity sci-fi was having because of the release of Star Wars. Now thinking on that we can see just how much of a failure TMP really was, because compared to Star Wars, TMP is like a dead dog nailed to an armchair. TMP nearly ruined the franchise where as ANH (that’s A New Hope) was the birth of one of the biggest and most profitable Science fiction series in history.
Another thing I’d like to hear opinions on; J.J. Abrams has been taped to direct the new Star Wars movies that Disney will be putting out and is also the director of the relaunch, or reboot or rewhatever, of the Star Trek series. What do you guys think of one man holding the directors chair on two of the biggest and most influential Science fiction series in our history?
But we don’t really want ST to remake the movies, what’s the point? We’ve all seen the movies! We want NEW movies and since some of the original cast is dead and some of the TNG cast should be dead, we’re stuck with new actors. After all, Mark Hamill isn’t playing Luke Skywalker anymore! (and for the record, The Phantom Menace almost destroyed the Star Wars Universe, so let’s not go into TMP being horrible, okay?)
I love when people complain that the new ships look better than the original of the same ship. Well, duh, but then, the original planets dont look the same as the original series planets in the DVDs or Netflix either….and “yuk” I really dont need to see William Shatner’s chest anymore…I really dont. he’s old enough to be my grandpa for pitty’s sake!

They actually did exactly that in the Animated Series episode “Yesteryear”. Spock returns from a time portal excursion to find himself in an alternate timeline in which he died as a child and the Enterprise has an Andorian science officer.
