• Have any of you read the story of the Czech Legion on the Eastern Front of WWI? The story would make an awesome movie. Many were former POWs that joined the ‘other side’ to seek freedom from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Russia is defeated, and the unit finds itself isolated in a Civil War.

The Unit fights many battles with the Reds and controls most of the Trans-Siberian railroad. The Legion captures large amounts of gold on it’s journey to Vladivostok, which the capture. The six rail cars of gold was used to secure the Czechs passage to Europe.

    The subject is amazing awesome.

Yes, and pretty neat stuff. The whole western intervention in the Russian revolution, too, is fascinating and often forgot.

One of my favourite pieces of Canadian trivia on the era includes the fact that a couple thousand Canadian conscripts bound for Vladivostok mutinied in Victoria, BC, right before Christmas in 1918. All their buddies were coming home from Europe and I’d guess these guys were not too happy about getting involved in a new war overseas. A dozen mutineers were arrested, found guilty of mutiny, then had their sentences commuted when the Canadian government decided that particular deployment of conscripts was maybe not too legal.

Also interesting: the Royal Bank of Canada sent a pre-fab branch to Vladivostok in 1919 hoping the revolution would be rolled back. Good luck with that venture, gents.

I’m certain I posted about this on the site previously.

This goes alongside the “Polar Bear Expedition”.

Basically an American invasion of Russia… WWI conditions in heavy snow… 100 marines sentenced to death for mutiny! some of the “highlights?” lol.

I’ll see if I can’t find my post!
