It can work. When the battle round is done and the casualty window pops up, hit cancel. Then save and post. You can’t save when the “select casualty” window is up. Cancel that out, you’re still in the combat sub-screen, then save.

Looking at board, I think I sacrificed an extra plane in battle - not a true casualty, but nowhere to land. In which case, I could have saved the bomber to land at Hawaii.
