OK, you’re the third guy I have seen do this move now…why? If it is a deep secret that you want to spring on my, I’m fine with talking about it later, but I can see no gain here at all. I only see the Soviet’s giving up all their positional and treaty advantage.
Mongolia is more of an advantage to Japan than Russia.
Obviously, the reason for the attack is to keep Mongolia out of play. Japan not being able to cross between North Russia and China is significant. Larry made the STUPID Mongolia rule apparently to deter a Japanese attack, but it actually has the opposite effect.

So you’re saying that by giving Mongolia to Russia if Japan attacks, Japan can actually take it “cheap”, because it is no longer a true neutral.
That’s right. And the territory is VERY strategic for Japan.
2 or 3 of the new Russian infantry can’t escape quickly enough and will probably only take out 1 Japanese infantry.
Even the 2 on the west take a few turns to get to the action.
Japan being able to consolidate their armies, cross over, fly over, etc. is a great advantage to them.
Japan can’t circumvent the Russian stack in North Russia unless Mongolia is in play.
It’s well worth the cost of 1 Russian infantry way out East (and he does have a 1/6 chance of hitting, and I’ve actually retreated it once before after the Japanese stack in Korea whiffed) to deny this great option for Japan.
