Time for one of the most crucial decisions of my gaming life…
My guts tell me to go for the 55% attack on Rome, but I’m just to nervous about that going badly.
Well, for what it is worth, I think you made the right call not attacking. I dont normally look at the odds from a battle calc when gaming so might just have seen it differently, but you’re enjoying a 2:1 income advantage, and none of the primary Allies are in a position to crumble…so why would you fight a 50/50 battle? Even the autowins can go sideways sometimes.
Destroying my factory in Germany was something I didn’t think about as a tactic, that was dirty.
Like I told Jeff in my other mid game; i’m going to keep playing this one for a bit longer. I dont see an Axis comeback, but midgame play for either side is something I have no experiance with.

but, if I have the rule correct, the fighters “return to base” so they would probably be destroyed on the ground.

Yes, you’re correct. Since there are no other Italian territories adjacent to the Sea Zone, if you scramble and I capture Cairo anyway, the Fighters die.
