Hey there - to give you a short answer about GenCon - it is a TON of fun. I have not played in tournaments for about 3 years now - I am a full time assistant GM with Greg Smorey - the guy who runs the events at both Origins and GenCon. As a GM, I just don’t have the time and schedule flexibility to play in a full tournament - and that is OK - I am at peace with that. :-D
Over the last few years, we have really seen an increase in the overall number of games played AND number of participants. Just about all the events are well attended (many sold out), the exception being some of the casual time slots for games such as D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, etc. The tournaments for Anniversary and for 1942 were both very popular.
One set of events that did not get a ton of people was the Global tournament. I think we had 4 teams this year. Part of the problem, I think, is that the games are slotted for 10 hours - and really, if someone wants to do that tournament, they will probably not have any time for much else. Now - for some people, that is fine and cool. I just think there is currently more interest in playing multiple games over the 4 days. But - we only ran this for the first time this year and it is too early to come to a final conclusion.
Lastly - Greg does a FANTASTIC job with prize support. I would argue that for the effort, his set of prizes may be the best around. Usually for all tournaments, first and second places get something - trouphies, copies of games, tee-shirts, dice, etc, etc. Plus - for each event you play in, you get a raffle ticket, which at noon on Sunday there is a drawing again for many of the same type of items - you only need to be present to win. Overall, a high percentage of players at our events walk away with SOMETHING.

Question: Would you be willing to concede the game at this point - I do not want to tell you what to do - I just think I have the US in a no-win situation.
If not, that is fine - I will concede to you. I have decided that it is time to step away from A&A for awhile as I have pretty much lost all the enjoyment playing due to various things.
