well, if this ban applied soley to “soft drugs” then a health inspector who walked into a restaurant/bar and saw people doing soft drugs could then apply a fine against the proprietor. So in effect, it is quite easy to enforce both “bans”.
as far as outright banning soft drugs, we are looking to decrinalize marijuana (some courts are already allowing for that), so i don’t see a plan in the works to ban smoking (outside of public buildings).also, if someone wants to commit suicide in their own home, i don’t really have a huge problem with that (unless its someone i care about/productive member of society/non-communist, etc.), however i do have a problem with them setting themselves on fire and walking into a public place, and i think that ought to be banned . . . .

well, the thing is that the way and frequency that it (mary j) is smoked tends to produce fewer lung cancers and less heart disease (and other diseases) than tobacco (i believe that there are slightly more mouth and throat cancers). I don’t know about any studies comparing 2nd hand smoke between the two, just that passive cigarette smoking is deadly (i.e. causes cancers, and may even invade the womb resulting in neurological problems in unborn children - although i don’t see pro-choice activists having a huge problem with this . . . ).

i (as a asmoker) wonder why “smoker-bashing” is that hip. I mean:
1)it’s an addiction, and that often is considered an illness/mental problem. You even find (for the famous and rich alcoholics and medicine abusers) clinics for them etc., only for smokers, it seems to be seen different.

Alcohol kills quite a lot pf unrelated people as well, or how many people die on the streets because of drunk drivers? What is the effect of “second hand smoking” in open spaces anyway? I don’t have any trouble to go outside to smoke… but then, is outside considered a “public place”?

What is the average dying age of smoker compared to a non-smoker? What are the costs of cancer operations etc. (for smokers) compared to the costs for treating the demented very old (non-smokers), the operation lasts a few hours, watching over people suffering from alzheimer lasts years? How much tax-income would be lost by losing the direct taxes on cigarettes, plus losing a whole branch of industry?
I have read (smoewhere) that smokers actually are very profitable in the above terms for the state and community… they pay taxes and health insurance, and then die early and rather quickly.
