• I really see no disadvantage for bringing Turkey into the EU. They are a large country with lots of natural resources, a good labor base, and lots of potential industrial expansion. They also have been one of the few Middle-Eastern countries that always supported Europe and the West.

  • I would love to see the turks in the EU, once they throw away that stupid death-sentence.
The problem is that the EU already is clumsy in its bureaucracy, and it will be evenworse with the accepted newcomers.
What has to be done, is give the EU more power over the nations, but of course no nation, especially the bigger ones, likes that.
This is something, which i really can’t understand: In the long run every country in the EU will profit from a well-working EU, but it seems like some people don’t want the EU to work well when it is not working their and only their way.
The EU surely is not a “christian club”, but it started out as western euopean club, then the scandinavians and some mediterraneans joined… now the east is joining, and then it’s the balkans (including turkey) turn…
it will take some time i fear…

    Turkey abolished the death penalty

I agree, but the UK does’nt even want the Euro, i doupt they will agree to centralization, it’s not in their nature.

It certainly look like a christian club, we have very little reason not to accept Turkey as a candidate, Europe would benifit from this door to the middle-east.

    bash bash bash . . . .

  • i did’nt bash at the christians (not this time at least :) ), i just think we should not reject turkey because they are islamic.

  • The problem with Turkey is that it is a large, underpopulated country that spends 60% of its budget on defence. It would hurt the EU. But I’m not surprised they want to get in. They want to get as far away from the Arabs as possible.

  • @FinsterniS:

    @GeZe:

I think Bulgaria should be in the EU

Your people is very receptive, the support for EU membership is the highest (or a little behind Romania maybe); ~75%. Romania and Bulgaria should be in the EU after the integration of the current 10 new country, but for Romania it’s not certain, they are way behind Bulgaria in adopting EU legislation.

    i didnt know that

  • Well, I’m sure that the EU will allow former Warsaw Pact countries in soon.

  • yes, Ierland voted yes so they can now take warsaw pact countrys

  • Ready or not, EU, here come the Hungarians!

  • hungry was in the warsaw pact

    Turkey abolished the death penalty

AFAIR it is still in their laws, they just don’t execute it anymore…
but i could be wrong here-

The UK should really rethink wether they want to stay in the EU…

Yup, that’s done and will come

the US wasnt in the league of nations

  • Well, the UK doesn’t have to adopt the Euro, does it? The pound is a very strong currency. BTW, I still have some old European coins such as pounds, German pounds, and a ton of Austrian marks (I think they’re called marks). I’m collecting them. Anyone willing to send over some of their country’s old defunct currency?

  • I think that if the UK does adopt the euro the euro value should go up averaging the pound and the euro

  • AFAIR it is still in their laws, they just don’t execute it anymore…
but i could be wrong here-

… and it’s a good thing. Now it’s the US turn to abolish capital punishment (and i don’t think it’s for tomorrow) :)

The UK should really rethink wether they want to stay in the EU…

Right ! They don’t seem to be very interested in EU’s institution. Of the 4 titans of the EU, only France and Germany get really involve, UK lack interest and Italy lack unity.

We should try to trade the Uk for Norway :)

Well, the UK doesn’t have to adopt the Euro, does it? The pound is a very strong currency.

No they did’nt, like Denmark and Sweden… and the pound is’nt so strong. Don’t forget that even if the value of ONE POUND is high, this does’nt mean it’s strong, it depend on how much pound there is in the economy. 1 jordanian dinar is worth more than 1 american dollar, but the dinar is not a very strong device…

  • …or bulgaria

  • you can’t trade the UK! They saved Europe’s ass in World War 1 and in World War 2. Give the Brits a break.

  • but Italy?
