Today, 12 Sept 1683,  a famous victory is celebrated over the Turk.
With the city surrounded by 250000 Turks bent on pillage and slaughter, Vienna looked due to fall. Vienna for so long a bastion of Christianity blocking Muslim advance in to Western Europe, was saved by the Polish king, subsidised bythe Pope, Alexander VIII. The Muslim commander, Kara Mustafa, ignored the obvious signs, so confident was he of Vienna’s imminent fall that the arrival of 80000 Christian soldiers crashing in to the Muslim horde, after 15 hours of battle relieved the city and put the besieging army to flight.
As an emissary from the Pope, acting as a liason between the various Christian leaders, was a Capuccin monk. In their flight, the Turks left supplies, including coffee. Finding it too bitter, honey and milk were added, some say on the suggestion of the monk, Marco D’Aviano.
As it happens, Vienna’s bakers celebrated the triumph by baking a roll in the shape of a crescent moon, calling it a kipfel. It was later taken to France!

Thanks Noll. I love history and conflict makes the best history and religion the best conflicts.
    Vive la difference!

Cappucino coffee and croissants – that pretty much adds up to a continental breakfast.

And not invented by those big headed French!
I have had mine today. Always do on the 12th Sept: would be wrong not to celebrate with my Catholic ancestors. Italy and its riches would have been next after Austria.
