Due to a recent mobilization of a small UK fleet with marines in the British Channel, France gets suspicious.
For now, I’ll take a position of neutrality from all the wars, while keeping alliance with UK and see what they do.
Eventual attacks on the holy grounds of France will settle my real enemies. Hower, France will not attack non belligerant forces.

Well that’s a surprising turn of events, you could at least have asked why I was sending those ships, which is to deal with the Russians, which you refused to kill. Still doesn’t change much for me though, no politics for UK.

Look who is speaking about "surprising. Lets quote Gekkepop a bit: “Fine you have yourself a deal, no more landing on your coastline and your ships pull back. The deal will be considered broken when your ships are not moving back to your home waters for a turn.”
Next GB actions:
- Keep units on occupied territories (actually moving a new unit there).
- Landing even more units, and taking additional territories.
- Send ships to “deal with the Russians”.

i don’t mind being backstabbed… it is the name of the game after all
but at least if you are going to stab someone, be in a good position to benefit from it
ie: either stab to win directly, or stab to put yourself in the position to win
this stab makes no sense at all, and i am nearly banging my head against the wall at just how stupid it is

The Boats in Gibraltar where my way of preventing an UK landing in Spain, I tought that boats are more usefull than few land units in preventing cheap landings.And I never had any intention of attacking Russia, nor you asked me to.

And lets not forget that you broke a deal you had with me way back. Did you follow your own rules, did you do that in order to immediately win, or to get in any good position? Doesnt look so to me. And I dont buy the preemptive stuff that you use as justification ;)

you were never an ally russia, despite my attempts to make diplomacy with you
therefore it is impossible to stab you in the backi guess you need to play more FFA’s with different groups of people
a general unspoken rule in FFAs, is that moving your troops to attack someone, is almost equal to attacking them. it literally means: “i will probably attack you next turn, or as soon as my other ally gets into position”
the fact that we sat there without war is meaningless, as the real reason was only that you were waiting for the ottomans to get on board before doing anything
you will find in any FFA or Diplomacy game, that moving all your units up to the border with someone, or taking bordering non-player buffer territories, is a great way to broadcast your intentions and make enemies at the same time
i decided it was not in my interest to wait for my 2 neighbors to be completely ready to kill me, and that it would be better to preemptively kill your fleet while i still could, before the chance to defend myself decently had passed
combine that with some diplomatic moves to convince the ottomans to hold off their eventual war with me for a while, and I bought myself a lifeline for a few turns.
you may forget what a precarious position austria (or any middle power) is in, in a FFA game. no matter what you do, you can never defend on all your fronts. to have 2x powers going at you is basically the end of you.
This is true even if you have allies, because you will always be the one losing units, and your allies will always be looking at your undefended backside and planning for the perfect backstab. Corner powers do not have this disadvantage because their ally isn’t up in their backsides.Quite literally, the only way for Austria to win, is to ensure that one of their neighbors is an ally, and that they both declare war on another neighbor, while all your other neighbors are distracted or allied or at least stay the heck away from you. This may sound similar to the strategy for every player in the game, but the main difference for Austria is that the longer the game goes on the worse Austria’s position gets, so Austria must basically eliminate or help to eliminate 1 other player in the first 7-14 rounds or risk losing the chance to win the game forever.
The best I could do after Ottoman and Russia had made up their minds that I was the enemy, was to take 2nd place.
I’ve never given up hope though, and succeeded in getting UK and France to put aside their war (at least for a while anyway) in order to help me survive longer, and also prolong Ottoman’s victory. I had hoped that I could last long enough to get my income back in shape and still be in the game til it got to 2 players, then still go for gold.
I knew that at some point UK or France would stab me, but I had assumed they would at least do it for a material victory of some kind. Either a giant TUV swing, or a large set of undefended territories, or the best possible type of stab of winning that turn with VC victory. When I attacked Russia (not a stab, as I explain above), I completely eliminated the Russian naval threat, claimed Russia’s convoy zone, safeguarded all of sweden from Russia, and got a 100 TUV swing against Russia. I would have expected France or UK to get a hell of a lot more out of it than France just did.

Veq, that this is just a game aside for now (all this is strictly within the game and not personal), pls dont lecture me regarding such games. I dont know how long you play things like Diplomacy ,probably for a long time, as do I. And not in all games do I find that a win is the most satisfying outcome, or possible at all due to this or that. And also, twist it like you want to, I told you that as long as you dont attack my territories, I wont attack yours. I kept my word, and you have no way to prove your theories, only wishful thinking. According to you its a given that anyone attacks in this situation, 100% of the time. Prove it that it would have been so in this game. Its your perception, it is what you expected, fine, no problem with that, but its nothing more than that. And it never happened. I also do not mind that you took preemptive measures, thats totally normal. But it made you the agressor, made it impossible to prove your expectation, and made me an implacable enemy. Thats all, and in hindishgt I am glad that I did not waste a lot of units on Scandinavian adventures….who knows what else would not have been in your best interest. Not taking under-defended Russian territories, maybe ;)

More than winning, my best interest is to support the powers that deserve my trust. If we check it from a Victory Cities points, the one that is in better position at the moment is the UK. And with the last Austrian attack (the suicide attack that left Vienna empty), The United Kingon is in great position of attacking and expanding in Russia alone. So as for now everything looks like Austria is a puppet state of UK.
I guess it’s a good play on the UK’s side.

It was not meant as an insult, I truly thought you were new to this sort of thing.
And of course everything is just within this game. I play a lot of games like Diplomacy and it is impossible to keep your head on straight if you take all your enemies and allies from a finished game into a newly starting game. If I ever play a game with any of you guys again, it is a clean slate in my mind. This might be my first game with most of you, but I’ve played with Noll before and like him quite a bit in our other games and look forward to more games with him and you all.
My opinions previously posted were the opinions of a rather frustrated Austria after being betrayed (but maybe not stabbed) by france, and overall in a bad situation regardless. Treat them as such.
I feel that I should also add that certain movements and builds often do constitute war, and the actual declaration of war is merely a stamp on it. An example would be France building navy in the english channel and marines in Paris.
For Austria, the things you did taken as a whole were almost the same as that (taking the neutral buffer right by prussia, moving your whole army to my front, building a navy in the baltic, putting down factories directly across our border [minsk]). Throw in the fact that you rejected all my offerings and diplomatic offers and private messages, and the fact that you also rejected various offers from me to draw-down and move-back our troops, either slowly or all at once. You really can not blame me for seeing war coming on the horizon led by you. So if you give me a 10 on the aggresso-meter, you surely deserve an 8 or 9 for pushing me into it. After all, if you didn’t want a war, you could have just moved back a space or shown even the smallest amount of interest in working with me on even humble matters. -
