I think Alpha 3.9 favors the Axis in this respect: The allies cannot contain both sides of the board so they have to crush one while stalling the other.  The allies must thus perform a balancing act that is hard to do.

Japan is easier to win with and easier to crush.  But if you let Germany alone it will take over everything.

You did an excellent job of rolling up Germany I think.  I am not so sure though about activating France.  I think using the factories is probably better.  If you had kept the US fleet back guarding Haw, pumped out units in Europe, I think you would have won.

    But, good game.

    I’ll post the result.

You are entitled to a rematch as the Axis.  Just let me know.

Again, it was fun and I enjoyed playing with you.  I’ll just try not to think about how many games of AA50 I could have completed in that time.

Interesting post-game analysis so far - I think liberating France worked out well, because the USA could stop spending money in Europe.  Those units don’t pay for themselves, you know.

I had a good chance of completely leveling West Germany this turn, especially if I took out the infantry in South Germany with the American airplane, allowing 2 extra ground from Yugo to invade.

Again, the attack on 36 was not a bad idea but the dice cursed me.  You had such a bad defense that I lost an extra carrier there.

It was a tight game all the way, so it was a really good one.  A lot of what if’s

But to win taking over Hong Kong, Phillipines, India, and Hawaii only… Shoot, it’s standard for Japan to do that by J3 or J4 in AA50
Great game, well played, don’t want to take anything away from you.  But I see I have more issues with Larry Harris…

And if I did go ahead with the attack on West Germany with the UK (and maybe with the US) it would be the French taking it over with several units to spare.  That would have been awesome.  But the damn Japs had to go and ruin everything.  What a crappy ending from my side of the board.  :-P

  • 22 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 12

There were several times I was scared the US would take Den and then the UK would go for the end run against Ger.

I was a little surprised by the UK not placing any miIC’s in the middle east/Egypt.  Those extra units could have bolstered ind.

It’s really an interesting question whether it would have been better to duke it out over Ind.  You would have lost barring any insane dice.  But it would have caused me to commit air assets and put them out of position.  May have caused my fleet to hang around the SEI… oh well, “what ifs”…

I find real fleet battles to often be one sided.  I think the fact your rolling high value dice tends to skew the results one way or the other.  Shouldn’t I suppose according to statistics.

No shame in barely losing to the undisputed 2012 1940 league leader!

I still don’t know how you make your moves so fast and are so effective at the same time!  Kudos

Oh, and no I don’t want to take the Axis.  I like to deliver the 1-2-3-4 punches, not be on the receiving end of them.  :-)

I understand.  I like playing the allies more too.  So, rematch as me the Axis again.  I assume you will want to take a break, so just hit me up when you think might want to take on g40 again.

    Cheers

Hey, I can do it right now.  You can bet I’ll err on the side of the Pacific to keep this from happening again… You can beat me with Germany/Italy this time!

Time for my nap, so if you want to get started, I want to play with tech again and I don’t think any bid is necessary, unless you want compensation for taking the Axis.

I will watch for scramble decisions at UK early this evening

oh, OK!  I never pass up a game.

Got to run, then I’ll be back.

watch, after spouting off about the Axis advantage, you’ll crush me like a fool…

    @Karl7:

watch, after spouting off about the Axis advantage, you’ll crush me like a fool…

I never said there was any Axis advantage.

I just don’t like that they only have to win on one board (especially the Pacific board) no matter what is happening on the other.  In fact, the Axis can even win with 2 capitals down.  The fact that they only have to hold any 1 capital at the same time is absurd too.  But the biggest thing is that the Axis can win without taking a single major capital (In fact, there is no major capital on the Pacific boards at all)

But yes, you can bet I learned a lot, and have moved along on the “learning curve”!  Looking forward to a clean slate.

By the way, what I really think is Larry should:

    1. Go back to world-wide victory city conditions like all past games (either side has to control vast majority of VC’s, like all but 4 or 5)
    2. To keep it even (which is the reason for the silly theater-specific victory conditions), neuter the Allies.  Specifically India and Australia are too powerful.  Actually, I don’t think India and Australia should be separate playable powers (or have their own economy).  It is possible for India or Australia to take over Tokyo, which is stupid.  And there are several other reasons I have for this position.  Australia simply should not be out-earning Italy.  I’m sure the Aussies were very successful and active around the globe, but what offensive could they ever launch from Australia?  This whole attacking the money islands and New Guinea and going to Hawaii and everything is absurd.  And having 10 IPC’s possible in national objectives?  Absurd.

Oh, and sinking so many Japanese ships, and starting with 3 fighters, and being able to buy anything other powers can buy…. Absurd!  And it gives the Allies too many turns.  And makes the game longer.  And makes Japan a bigger headache to play.  etc etc

  • 22 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 12

I meant that I said that the Axis have an advantage….

ironic that I said that and suspect this time you will win handily

And you had a bad feeling about Z46
