I always found it strange how units cannot retaliate after bombardments. They would hide from the ships if it was bombarding unless they had something to engage.
-
Also does uk ever die in these FFA games? seems so secluded off on his little island.

Dying is hard for UK, but I’ve seen games where UK loses her med convoy, loses all of ireland, loses hanover, and has a stalemate fleet situation with spain.
Normally, Spain builds more ships than she has done in this game, and in addition, France’s fleet in the english channel escapes and join’s spain’s fleet. They together manage to hold France’s convoy zone in the atlantic.
France also does not usually lose her med fleet, which usually takes the uk convoy zone, and keeps some pressure on the uk fleet down there or joins up with spain too.If does this, plus goes land for the first few turns, sweeping much of europe’s neutral income, then together with sweden takes hanover, then UK is pretty much sidelined for the entire rest of the game.
Spain can quickly (if played well) gain +10-16 income from the med. Throw in the extra 12 income from France keeping her convoys, and the -6 income for UK losing her convoy, and you are left with a situation where Spain actually has either parity or an income advantage over the UK.
Fleet is very expensive, so bombardments are not that powerful in the respect that you must still offload x number of land units to get x bombardments. However, if you don’t like it, you can make defender’s fire back by selecting it in the game options before the game starts.
The game was balanced (for single player) with the current setup, but for FFA you could probably change it without too much worry on the balance. -
I don’t like being forced to ally with someone to have an optimal strategy…takes the fun away from free for all.
-
may as well play teams. Way I see it france’s fleet is dead meat. At the start of the game, France can easily take spain which is no fun, because spain has so few men that there is not much of a fight. No one can take over uk. bombardments are cheesey with no retaliation. Sweden is screwed.
I see how this game plays out in the normal mode, but the FFA requires some pretty big changes. Can’t assume people are going to work together.
Also how does building naval work? Like where you place them?
Plus your strategy guide is really funny, it says ally spain, then it tells spain to backstab france after some time. What is that?
-
First, I think you are judging UK a little bit too harshly. The main reason UK is kicking ass, is because I am the UK.
I’ve played this game a ton, and I coded this game, so you’d be damned sure I’m pretty good at it. Plus, this is everyone else’s first game.Secondly, this is an asymmetric FFA map.
If I made all the powers equal, then it would play completely differently. It could be fun, but it would not stay true to history and it would not have the feel of the Napoleonic Wars.
You are not forced to ally with Spain in order to crush UK. But you are also not forced to go to war with the UK at all.
Yes, France can take over Spain with some ease, but you can bet that will invite every other power on the board into France.
Sweden is only screwed because of a good number of mistakes Seth made (this is his first game, give him a break). Actually, Sweden’s TUV at game start is quite high, so as long as he doesn’t suicide his units a couple times and manages to convince at least one of his neighbors not to go to war with him, Sweden will do just fine.Again, you need to look at it through the perspective of the victory conditions. The victory conditions for France and UK are quite high, while the conditions for everyone else are relatively low.
Third, I never said spain should backstab france. The 10-16 extra income in the med normally comes from northern africa, and sometimes italy.
(You build navy the normal way: put a general or camp or capital by the ocean, and then build there)
-
I could rename this version the “historical” FFA version,
and then make a new version where all the powers start with roughly equal TUV (though there will still be slight difference due to position, etc).
I don’t know if anyone would be interested in that though…. -
Well, my only complain is the big 14 IPCs convoy… Spain loses 14 IPCs for it, but only wins 4 (lose 10 to ‘balance’ the game). It forces Spain too much to defend that convoy
But I can live with it… I guess that Godoy is stealing income or such… Spain is isolated as well, and unless that France goes berserker to south, it’s a easy game the first rounds. You could guess that the Prince of Peace would had forgot Gibraltar and ally with UK if France had gone all to south
FFA are always volatile. Soon or later UK will receive more attention, just hold a bit, cow
-
oh functionetta you can take my capital anytime. we have open borders when you get in range of me the next turn declare war on me then I buy nothing and you take my capital.
-
bombardments are still cheesy, I feel needs to be nerfed for game balance.
-
Also your strategy guide say for france to make navy, but france cannot.
-
revised / classic bombardment rules were lame there is a reason all the axis and allies games don’t do that anymore.
-
playing uk is like saying, I want to be the king of cheese, I lose nothing attacking because bombardments are full cheese and everyone who tries to attack back will take losses.
everyone else takes loses for fighting.
-
@Cow:

You have a general… just move him to the coast somewhere. You could build navy round 1 if you wanted to, just by moving your general to the coast.
Or you could build a camp on the coast somewhere.FYI on bombardments, you can bombard too.
Have you ever played “Revised”? Revised bombardments are even more powerful. -
instant kill bombardments, revised is drop 1 unit get 7 bombard. sure this is 1 for 1, but 3-4 bombardments and most neutrals on the map are done.
-
plus player coastal countries near you are mostly 2s and 3s.
-
Hey its me!
Sorry, cow talks so much I lost track of the thread!
Post tomorrow.

The Ottomans urge to play!
-
hmm uk’s unit count is getting awefully high… I guess that is what happens when someone sits out of war for so long… guess we got to bring war to uk.
