    Sorry guys. Having some problems here.  I am in the mountians for the weekend and my mobile internet is very shotty.  I have had to reload the thing midstream a few times, and one of the times was between the UK Euro and UK Pac placement.  I wasn’t sure what had happened, so I added 5 inf to Calcutta, and then when it corrected itself, I needed to delete them.

    All the dice were sent properly however, so there is no combat resolution issue.

    The Pearl Harbor finesse on the J1 DoW opening is a way to neutralize US sub / transport shenanigans and utilize more Axis fighter firepower early in the game.

    There are two options for the American defender:

    1. Scramble. In which case, if enough Japanese fighters are lost during combat, you are free to reposition one or more of your SZ6 carriers to more flexible, aggressive positions like the Carolines or Philippines during non-combat movement.

    2. No scramble. In which case, an easy Japanese naval victory is assured at little or no cost to yourself. Just leave at least one destroyer behind off Hawaii to block the Los Angeles fleet’s counter-attack (either a battle survivor or a SZ6 leftover). This means the only possible counterattack remaining comes from US air power only – no hit soaks from Allied naval units are possible. The battle should, statistically, be more costly for the US than Japan, should they choose to attempt to recreate the Battle of Midway. Taking Wake Island with 2 infantry would be another way to tilt the odds in Japan’s favor (this cuts a further two US fighters out of counterattack range, but considerably slows conquest of East Indies).

    I gambled hard on Dutch choosing the ‘scramble’ option, as I hadn’t properly prepared any counter-counterattack (a 2-sub, 2-transport purchase would be better for that; as well as a repositioning of more fighters to Japan during non-combat movement phase). Attacking with just enough units to make it a fair fight if he scrambled was part of my plan to bait him, but he didn’t bite.

    Next time, I’ll hedge my bets and make more aggressive purchase and placement decisions, so that the defender’s choice less completely determines my J2 move…

    Anyway, keep up the good work in compiling and analyzing optimal opening moves.

  • I am losing my computer earlier than expected – this Saturday morning. After that, as I mentioned before, it’s 10 days of life as a nomad before getting set up again. I predict I won’t be able to log my next move until June 22nd or 23rd.

    Could I ask for a cease-fire until then? I’d hate to scupper what looks like a very interesting game for all involved… And I think that other teams may be even slower than ourselves in making progress, so there’s no worry about missing the next round. Let me know what you think, MIR
