If the allies attacked north Italy and there were axis fighters in south Italy they could scramble to resist an amphibious assault even though south Italy is not the territory being attacked.  So in that way you could defend north Italy even though it had no airbase.

Sounds good.  I really like that move with Italy, Egypt’s within reach.  Just one more thing, you wouldn’t be able to retreat the rt in Egypt because it came by transport, so you’ll have to keep the mech.
