oops what am i thinking, i lose the sub and 2 fighters! and then the transport is sunk and the battle is over, you have one sub remaining. guess it was too early for me to fight that battle!
-
here’s an interesting question. COULD I retreat after round 1 to z13 with the sub. IF i did, would the transport survive? or is it dead in round 1 because all surface defense was eliminated? things that make you go hmmmm
If you took 3 Ftr as casualties you could retreat and the Trn would survive by my interpretation of the rules. If you take 1 Sub 2 Ftr as casualties then I think the battle is over and you cannot retreat and leave the Trn.
-
correct. check out the errata thread for discussion there. i always thought the transports technically “took hits” so if there were, say, 10 of them and you attacked with 9 units, you could kill 9 and then retreat if you wished. not so.

transports do take hits but only in occasions when a defender is around to shoot back, if there is not anything around that has combat value then you’re right the battle is over and retreating is not an option.
-
what i mean is there is no concept of transports taking X number of hits. if a single transport is hit, all transports are hit. in addition, if there were 2 destroyers and 5 transports that were attacked with 3 bombers and the bombers hit exactly twice in the first round, the destroyers AND the transports are ALL sunk. no ifs ands or buts about it. according to krieg.

ie, i cannot retreat after one round getting exactly the number of hits that sink the surface ships. not that you would ever want to, but it cannot be done.

to be more precise i should state, that is if one is attacking with only air. if there are also ships and the defender still has subs present, the battle can continue if the surface ships are sunk in round 1.
now, this is an interesting fact… if i had gotten 7 hits with air in round 1, it WOULD have sunk the transport and I could have had the option to lose 3 fighters in round one and retreat the sub to z13.

I can think of 1 exception to this. 1 Heavy bomber vs 1 defender and X Transports. If you’re playing heavy bombers can get multiple hits then you could kill a transport and be killed in the same round leaving all but 1 transport.
-
tough loss for the Italians there, I didn’t consider those Moscow Ftr joining the battle.

interesting thought and that could be, but i’m not sure if krieg would agree.
-
yeah, i figured that was my one chance to cut down that fleet before it became a juggernaut!
-
with my very nice attack roll, i was hoping for the defense to score one or two hits and really make out, but in the end it came out pretty much even (i think you lost one more sub than expected)
