• Two Q’s…

    1. For a strategic bombing raid with a heavy bomber, does that bomber get to roll 3 dice for the raid?

    2. Again, for strategic bombing raids, does an AA gun get to fire once per bomber or once per raid?

  • I think anyone who pays 5ipc’s on inventions deserves to get some nice effect if it eventually works. It is money ill-spent in my eyes anyway but if you get lucky you invent a nuke, but I rather have a tank then a one in thirtysix chance of having heavy bombers.

  • Come on, when we take a normal chance you could trade six tanks or something else worth 30ipc’s for an invention. Honestly SIX tanks, I would rather have six tanks then one of those inventions, the only ones worth it are 5+6, the rest is just gravy.

  • no no, if we try to go for 1 technology then its most likely we will need 3 or 4 dice on average to get a technology. This means only 3 or 4 tanks. Id rather get a technology instead of 4 tanks.

  • If you do the math, it takes 36 tries to promise heavy bombers on odds. So thats 36 * 5 = 180 IPCs for heavy bombers, and thats on odds. Yes, if you get lucky you can win the game. But, if your on odds its a lot of money ill spent. 180$- 60 infantry, 36 tanks, 15 fighers, 12 Bombers, 7.5 Battleships, 22.5 Subs/Transports, and 10 Aircraft Carriers. What would you rather have?

  • no yanny, your making the same mistake. You will get heavy bombers in 1 of 36 turns, this doesnt have to be the last of these turns, but it will on average be about 18 turns. This means spending or wasting 90 IPC’s (3 turns income) to most likely get heavy bombers. Offcourse that will probably be not worth the cost, but if you realise that there is also a big chance of getting an other technology when trying for heavy bombers.

But anyway i never do weapons development as it involves too many risk.

  • No, what I ment by that is too be guaranteed heavy bombers you’d need 36 tries.

  • you might be very unlucky and not throw a 6 for more then 1000 turns

  • Thats exactly what I meant Yanny. In my eyes inventions are a waste of money. Maybe thats why the creators of the game didn’t use inventions in A&A Europe and Pacific

  • I usually buy tech rolls when I see my fronts collapsing a few turns down the line, which seems likely to kill me. I spent half my cash on rolls and hope to get lucky. If I get Industrial Tech or Heavy Bombers I could still win.

  • It makes sense to invent stuff if you are so lucky as to roll once for every two times you roll two dice and is is a last resort as Yanny said but there are people that spent their first Japanese turn in the following way: 1IC and two dice for inventions, When I first started playing I did that once and got Two sixes and subsequently 4+6!! That was very funny indeed but I wouldn’t do it again unless I am in dire straits as Yanny mentioned.

  • Tech rolls are not meant to be a last resort. Odds are if yur desperate and get heavy bombers, you won’t have much money to but bombers. But if you are not desperate and get it, then its bombers, infantry and transports for you for the rest of a short game.
It is better to “set up” for tech. for example, if Britain plans on spending for research later, he can see that 3 out of six (four if you count industrial tech) help aircraft. So, they buy a ton of bombers, fighters, or whatever and start bothering Germany. When they are in a good position for the posible benifits(they are already bombing Germany and feel stepping it up), Then they start rolling die. Its not a gamble, just luck, or desperate its a calculated risk. Also, three dice for heaviesd is realistic because-if you have heavy bombers technology-you spent a significant sum for the technology, AND you still had to buy the Bombers at 15 ipc each, (maybe 14 ). If you get hit by three heavy bombers strat bombing with 9 die, then your enemy invested 45 ipcs+ the money they spent on tech. And, you have a fifty-fifty shot of hitting one bomber before it hurts you (you could even hit more)
I don’t often use it but, I also know a house rule (it came from Spring1942.com’s Kremlin rules, other very interesting rules there) In which there are no tech rolls until round five, THEN only two tech rolls per side (axis or Allies) until one side gets heavy bombers, then-unlimited tech rolls for both sides.
Thank you for reading my long post and please respondto it if you think I am wrong

  • Also I wanted to add that if you are desperate, get heavies, and start buying bombers. THEN your enemies will try to destroy them at all costs, and since you are desperate and building 15 ipc units that defend at one die roll of one (or less ), you won’t be able to defend them very well.
