Situation US liberates Gibraltar, next turn can the US build an Air Base on Gibraltar? If no, why?
Gib is an original UK territory. Is London in Axis hands, in your example?
No, I liberated Gibraltar…I just don’t understand the rule…strange rule actually…it is kinda weird in wording…same with the scramble rule…say you have 5 bombers and and 4 fighters wanting to do an SBR and you have 7 fighters defending but only 3 can scramble…that’s odd as well
Yes, you may have liberated Gib from Italy? Germany? but the roundel printed on the map makes it an original UK territory. Therefore only UK can build an airbase, unless UK is in Axis hands.
Yes, you are limited on an air raid response, too. Up to three fighters or tactical bombers can respond. But only the enemy bombers or tacs can “attack” the fighters are only escorts, to fight any interceptors you send up.
Rules say eligible territory…what constitutes eligible? Why would an ally territory not be considered eligible? US built tons of bomber bases in the UK during WW ll…Stupid rule if you ask me
If you haven’t noticed, this game is not about maximizing realism. The rulebook provides a way to enjoy a match. There are much more realistic WW2 games out there if you want to go that route.
You certainly are welcome to have house rules. There is a entire section of the Forum dedicated to that. Unfortunately it is almost impossible to get a significant subset of this community to have any favorable opinion towards a change. The Balance Mod is the only thing that has gained major acceptance in League matches.
A Bomber Harris …I understand what you are saying…and my game that I play is vastly different, however I am playing to hone my game for Younggrasshoppers invitational. Do you know why that rule exists and why eligible territories is left open to interpretation?
Just because I share the same last name doesn’t mean that I have insight into the Why of any rule :-D. I do know that the rule has significant impact on the overall strategy. For example if you are going to do Sea Lion, consider leaving Gibraltar as UK controlled since no air base can be built there. Also consider leaving France in control of some more NW African territories to prevent US airbases being built.

I was looking in the rulebook and I didn’t see where it said eligible territory, Leatherneckinlv. What it says is that you can place an airbase in any “controlled” territory. When you liberated Gib you returned it to being a UK controlled territory and not a US territory so that’s why you couldn’t build an airbase there. If London was under control of Germany or Italy then you would’ve been able to take control of Gib.
My guess is this is what prevents players from, for example, moving an American infantry unit to a Russian territory and then placing a complex there. If that were the case you could then move the same infantry unit to all of the 2 IPC Russian territories that don’t already have a complex there and then place a US one. I know that there is a difference between airbases and complexes but in the rules you have to control a territory to place anything there.
If the US could build even airbases and naval bases on Allied territories, that would change the game significantly. For example, if USSR takes Norway, building an airbase there connects planes in a single turn to Moscow. Similar with an airbase on Transjordan.
