First, Annual Global 1940 Tournament - Sign-ups open!

  • Thank you, it was misleading a bit since I thought people were saying the axis never win. It seemed weird that you would bid low in order to get the axis under that premiss.

I understand the bidding, thanks again.

  • So if I prefer the allies, I would bid 1000 or something high. If I was indifferent I would avoid a zero bid as that means I will be the axis automatically….I guess indifferent would be a bid like 25.

If you bid 1000 IPC for the Axis you would almost certainly win, but this might backfire.  What if your opponent bid 999 IPC for the Axis?  You could be facing an additional 333 Infantry! (or more likely, tanks, ships, aircraft and a smattering of infantry, but you get the point.)

That is why, even if you want to be the allies, you may want to think about how much you really need to win with the Axis and bid that amount.

I will consider it providential… my schedule this fall is waaaaaaaaaay too busy for a tourney. I will be content with the “for fun” games I currently have going. I rarely get past the second round anyway… Was just curious.

Good, does that mean our game will have a post soon?

  • This just in from Larry’s site:

“I’m about ready to post Alpha+ 3. Probably next week. If I find myself without electricity for 4 or 5 days, as some are predicting, I’ll be a bit longer posting it.”

He was talking about Hurricane Irene.  Since Alpha+3 will come in this week or next week at the latest, I suggest we postpone the tourney til September 15th or something.

Wow!!!  That is big news.  Looks like everyone will be noobies now.

  • I would actually prefer not to wait, what if there is a delay in the Alpha3? People get busy and they might not be posted as promised. I’m itching for a game and a first round exit;)

Booger has a good point, another one is that Alpha 3 is completly untested and unverified by the gaming community (how could it be otherwise?  He has not released it to the general public yet.)  Granted, he has taken advice from some of those who posted on his boards to create Alpha 3, but that does not satisfy my concern that there could be a fundamental flaw, nor would anyone know how to bid.

Perhaps round 2 could be alpha 2 or alpha 3 and leave it up to the players playing it to determine which version they wish.  It would give us 6-8 weeks to review it before deciding.

If there are arguments to be made to delay for the new rule set, I am open minded, but from what I have heard/seen so far, I am not convinced it is a good idea.

  • If you are looking for additional opinions:

I would agree with the proposal to proceed with the current Alpha 2 version the players are familiar with.

These rules have been out for a while, and while there are concerns about balance, any changes to address this balance in Alpha 3 may prove to be unbalancing for the other side. If Alpha 3 arrives on schedule, between now and the next tournament, players will have had time to adjust to the new platform.

This seems like a more level playing field, in that if there is a new exploit to be found with the new rule set, most players will be forewarned by the next tournament. As it stands, changing to a new set could result in some unexpected eliminations due to the new conditions.

There will be plenty of time to test Alpha 3 outside of the tournament. (especially if your game concludes prior to the next rounds).

In closing, sticking with what we know, assures us that we won’t switch to something that might be better. More importantly, it could prove to be worse. How quickly did the community switch from A1 to A2 for example.

  • Also, this gives me a chance to prove or disprove the balance issues that have been discussed in a formal and public forum. :)
