First, Annual Global 1940 Tournament - Sign-ups open!

  • I might be interested, but I don’t know how to play online… And I don’t know the bidding system…

The best way to learn game play is to find a game thread in the “Play Games” forum and read it.  The command line for throwing dice is:

    ;aaa 2@1 4@2 3@3 1@4;

where the ; is replaced with :
where the number before the @ is how many dice you want to throw
where the number after the @ is the target number (four or less for instance)

The system will then bold your hits and count the number for you (as you can see in the game threads.)

Here is a link to a game I am playing with Mollari: http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=23867.345;topicseen so you can get a gist of what some of us expect to see.

A note:  EM devised a system of naming the game files so that they show up in a folder in order:
    01Agermany
    01Brussia
    01Cjapan
    01Dallies
    01Eitaly
01Zfrance (z predessor was actually my idea, ffrance looked too funny to me so I got silly and used a z once, and it stuck)
    02Agermany

    denotes round

    A-Z denotes country order
    country name is self explanatory

Jennifer,  I’d like to join in but wondering what the typical expectations are for speed of play. Work and other commitments typically leave me with time for a single round every other day at most. Don’t want to slow things down for anyone playing. If you could clarify for me, be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

A turn every other day is usually fine.  Typically we kind of go by a move every 72 hrs at least.  Tourny games can move faster, but as long as your opponent knows your pace it usually works out fine.

There is also consideration of temperary issues that come up in life.  I used to be a travelling technician and I know that at times you are just out of town with no reasonable access to the internet, your programs and your game boards.  Illiness can also effect some.

Try to keep DM and/or myself AND your opponent up to date with your posting schedule as best you can.  Otherwise, the 72 hour guideline is a pretty reasonable expectation on posting rate.  That is not to say always wait 72 hours to post!

Thank you for explaining typical expectations. Very reasonable and thought out. I’ve found everyone on this forum to be kind and thoughtful. We all have lives and just trying to fit our little addiction into our busy schedules!  :-D

Let us get to 32 before debating another expansion.  48 Might work next.

Any thoughts of doing a 2v2 tournament at the same-time or maybe that would be too much at once.

About a month ago I had set up a poll to see if people wanted to play 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 and most wanted 1 on 1 play.

I’ll be happy to run another later this year with 2 on 2 in mind, if you like.

Sounds good to me, I figure a lot of people would like “tournament” play….

May not get as many people involved but if even if you have 4 or 8 teams, you can change the format up a bit to make it last a little longer.

I have a few logistical questions:

    1. When it say players bid for Axis that means the player offering the lowest bid plays as the Axis powers, correct?

    2. Is zero the lowest possible bid, or could a player bid negative?

    3. If a negative bid is permissible, then would it be removing units or starting IPC or either?

Sorry if the answers seem obvious, but I’ve never played with bidding.  Thanks  :-)

    1. Correct
2/3. You would go negative.  Never seen it happen, and should probably never happen in global because the Allies are heavily favored.  If you won a negative bid, I would say that then the Allies would be getting IPC’s or units to place, in the amount of the negative.  Negative 3 bid, Allies could place an infantry or take 3 IPC’s, for example.  So not removing, but placing for the Allies instead of the Axis.

  • '17

I’m not saying I’d go so far as to bid negative, but I like to know my options.

Overall, my Allied game is weaker than my Axis game too.  Not saying Axis is favored, I think I just make more errors as Allies.
