Boots on the Ground

This is a BBC article from yesterday that looks into the origin of the phrase “boots on the ground” (as a synonym for the deployment of combat troops).  Surprisingly, it’s a recent coinage dating back just 34 years, even though the word “boot” by itself has had military overtones for much longer.
